"Reaching our Potential with Respect, Care and Friendship"

Ski Trip, Project Work

3rd March 2014

Science experiments sometimes don't look very high tech.

Skiing Trip

On February 15th, a group of Ard Scoil students accompanied by their teachers, left the school on their long awaited and much anticipated skiing trip to Bulgaria. With large suitcases and ski jackets in hand the girls jumped on the bus for the journey to Belfast where they spent the night in a hotel.

The following morning, at the unearthly hour of 5.30.a.m. the girls dragged themselves out of bed to catch their early flight but with their excitement levels soaring, they laughed and sang songs all the way to the airport. By that evening they were safely ensconced in their hotel situated in a small village just 3 km from the slopes.

Monday morning the girls were up, dressed and at breakfast by 8.15. They left the hotel an hour later, travelling by bus to the ski school where they were given their boots, poles and skis for the week. Following an introductory lesson, at one o’clock the girls tucked into pizzas, chips and coke at the restaurants on the slopes. Full after this healthy meal(!), they headed back to the slopes for another lesson which ended at 3.30.. This would become their routine for the next 6 days, one they would come to love.

In the evenings, after dinner, the girls enjoyed various activities from a karaoke night to crazy bowling. Sometimes they relaxed in the hotel lobby after their tiring day on the slopes and had a game of pool. By mid-week they had made friends with many of the students from the other visiting school and shared their company in the evenings.

As the end of the week approached, the girls had improved their ski skills so much that many were skiing on green, blue and even red slopes with the careful advice and supervision of their instructors.

On Friday night, the members of the group were awarded certificate for completing the skiing course and were given a grade. As Sunday drew nearer, the girls dreaded the thought of leaving the beautiful area and bringing their trip to an end. With a good few bruises but many happy memories, the group left the hotel on Sunday morning. After a long day of travel they finally arrived back in Dungarvan at midnight, absolutely wrecked!

All in all it was a wonderful experience, “Better than Words”

Project work

There is always some exciting activity going on in the Ard Scoil and from now on students’ projects will be on view on the school website. This week for example, the fantastic History projects of 1.1 on the Celtic period have inspired the 2nd years who are preparing projects on the Revolutionary period. Second year English students have produced superb work based on the study of “To Kill a Mockingbird” and “The Daffodils” and first and second years are seeking inspiration for the Easter poetry competition organised by Mrs. Maria Curran. Indeed some poems have been penned already.

Second year science students showed off their skills with experiments in the lab and students in all the other disciplines are hard at work too.
