It’s Panto time this week in the Ard Scoil.
After months of practice with Mr. Collins and his crew, the students finally take to the stage with this year’s production of Cinderella. The panto takes place on Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday at 7.30. If you don’t have your tickets already I advise you to get them quickly in order to enjoy the fun and frolics. Tickets €10 adult, €5 children and €30 for a family ticket for two adults and two children.
Come along and join in the fun with all the drama, comedy, singing, music and dancing of our very talented students.
Visiting Speaker – Shane Mullins “D’Mess”
On the 20th November 2013 the Ard Scoil na nDéise 5th and 6th year students were visited by a speaker named Shane Mullins. Shane came to speak to us about his tragic accident that changed his life in a majorly positive way. He talked about when he was younger, how he got expelled and never got a proper education. He began drinking and this led to his accident.
He went to a party and drove home after drinking. He hit a ditch and his car flipped causing a pillar to come through and injure his head. He informed us how after he was out of hospital he began drinking his problems away and had too much pride to admit he needed help.
Finally he told us about how he became determined to get physically and mentally healthy. He made the decision to get himself out of “d’mess” he'd got himself into. He started doing speeches to inspire people and tell people his story. The Ard Scoil students found his speech motivating and we greatly appreciated him taking the time to come in and speak to us.

Religious Ceremonies - Blessing of Miraculous Medal
The tradition of blessing and distributing miraculous medals goes back to when Sr. Rosario was Principal here. In keeping with this, on Friday, November 15th, Father John Harris visited our First Years and explained to the girls the history of the Miraculous Medal and the apparition of 1830 when Our Lady appeared to Catherine Labore (a novice with the Daughters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul).
Fr. Harris had visited the chapel of the Rue du Bac in Paris where this apparition occurred and was able to make the story come alive for the girls. He then went on to bless the medals and distribute them to the girls. Our sincere thanks to Fr. Harris and also to Mercy sister, Sr. Philomena who prepared all the medals.
Mass of Remembrance
As November is the month of the Holy Souls, Fr. Harris celebrated Mass in the Junior School. Before Mass, a booklet containing the names of deceased family members and friends was taken to the altar to be remembered during the celebration.
It was a privilege to have Mass celebrated in our school as it brings a special blessing on all of us. A Mass of Remembrance will be celebrated in the Senior School on Wednesday, November 27th.
I would like to thank the religion teachers for preparing the Mass, the celebrant Fr. Harris and John Morgan, Minister of the Eucharist.

To Kill a Mocking Bird
The second year students are currently studying “To Kill a Mocking Bird” by Harper Lee as part of their English course. The girls really enjoy this well loved novel and the 2.3 class recently completed some excellent projects on the book.
There was a newspaper with the court case as its leading article, a box full of the treasures the children found in the tree, a letter from Scout to Dill, a map of Maycomb among the wonderful work produced by the girls who demonstrated both literary and artistic skills in their work. Well done girls - I hope you will enjoy many other books as much as you have enjoyed this one.
Below are examples of the projects inspired by the book.
