Football Blitz & Championship Success, Surfing & The Ploughing Championships 30th September 2013
First Year Football Blitz With their teacher, Ms Fiona Rocheford, the First Years headed to their first football blitz last Thursday, September 26th, in Carraignore. Twenty three of our first years took part in the blitz, divided into two teams, the Ard Scoil Tigers and the Ard Scoil Lions. The first team to play was the Tigers helped by T.Y. students Laura Cusack and Grace Heffernan. They played three matches and showed some great footballing skills. The second team, the Ard Scoil Lions, managed by T.Y. helpers Ciara Hurley and Ellen Curran played three matches also. They ,too, showed great skill. All the girls enjoyed the day and the future is bright for these young students. The panel was as follows; Mia Power, Carina Crotty, Tierna Connors, Genna Crotty , Aisling Walsh, Sinead O’Brien, Claudia Quarry, Orna O’Brien, Kayleigh Beecher, Lucy Booth, Rebecca Downey, Laura Keeley, Anna Whelan,, Niamh Foran, Niamh Hayes, Danielle Cantwell, Lowri Davies, Aoife Loome, Kirsty Green, Sarah Gough, Clodagh Fraher, Sharon Dee and Shannon Young. Senior Football Success On Wednesday, September 25th, our senior footballers travelled to Carrigtwohill for their first championship match of the season against St. Aloysius. As soon as the ball was thrown in, it was clear it was going to be a very tight match for the Ard Scoil girls. Neither side gained the upper hand at the beginning of the match. A Carrigtwohill lead was countered by a fine goal scored by Ciara Hurley which was followed by a further goal by Sinead McCarthy which allowed the Ard SCoil girls to pull away and dominate the match. St. Als. Attempts to get back into the match were stopped by a fierce line of defence and superb saves by goalkeeper Niamh Carlton. Two more goals were scored, the final whistle blew and our Ard Scoil girls had won their first championship match. They now advance to the next round and we wish them the best of luck. Maggie Hally, Sarah Supple and Ornaith Keane T.Y. Surfing T.Y.s had a brilliant day in Tramore last Friday when they went surfing at the Oceanic Surfing School. The group was divided into two, with one group doing a cryptic challenge around Tramore. For the challenge, the teams of three were given a set of clues and set off around the town. During this time, the other group of T.Y.s went surfing. Three of the coaches gave lessons on the beach before the girls excitedly entered the freezing water. Wetsuits, wet shoes and surf boards were all provided by the school. By the end of the day, everyone had done all the activities and headed home, tired but happy. Caitriona O’Brien and Grace Heffernan The Ploughing Championships On September 24th, we T.Y students headed off to the first day of the National Ploughing Championships which were opened this year by President Higgins at Ratheniska, Stradbally, Co. Laois. We started the day off early as we all met at the school at seven o’clock and we arrived at the event at 10.00. As we arrived, a tractor and trailer approached and we all hopped on. It brought us to the ticket stands where we all handed over our tickets in exchange for a wrist band which was our pass to enter through the gates. We split into groups and waved each other on our way. About 1,400 exhibitors had stands at the 800 acre site which made it quite hard to get around to every stall! There was a huge variety of things to see from tractors, crushers and lime spreaders to hair products, make up and even tooth whitening booths! There surely was a stall to suit everyone. At around 2o’clock we and our friends headed to the R.T.E. stall where we met Daithi O’Shea and we had a photo taken with him. After our encounter with Daithi, we did the weather forecast which was good fun. We headed out and did our last minute shopping before we headed back to the area where we were to meet our teachers. Just before we left, President Michael O’Higgins passed us in his car and waved at us. We then went back to the bus and left Stradbally to head for home. Overall it was a wonderful day and the only complaint we had was we should have worn wellies instead of shoes as our feet were covered in blisters. I think it was worth it though! Louise Conway |
