T.Y.'s - Horse Riding, Hairdressing, Robbie's Lunch; Rapunzel Foundation, Vintage Car Run 20th May 2012
T.Y. News The T.Y. students have been very busy in the last few weeks and two of them have written about their exploits. Horse Riding On Tuesday the 7th and Thursday the 9th of this month the T.Y.s headed out to Colligan Equestrian Centre for a riding lesson. Some of us had never ridden before and for others it had been years since we had been in a saddle, so we were all both nervous and excited! Once we had got our helmets, the first half of the session was a lesson for those of us who could ride a horse so we each “buddied up” with a pony and zipped around the arena trotting, cantering and trying to hear the songs that were playing on the radio near the entrance to the arena. The second half was for those who had never ridden a horse in their lives! While the ponies were lead by the girls from the first lesson, everyone learned how to steer and do rising trot and all picked it up quickly and with no “horsing around!” So, regardless of the stiffness in our legs that may never go away, we had a great afternoon and are devastated that we don’t have enough time left to go back this term! Lauren Mulvihill. Hairdressing Eleanor from “The Colour Room” called into the Ard Scoil last week to give the T.Y.s a talk and a demonstration on hair care and styling. We all gathered in the Demonstration Room and Eleanor began by giving us some tips on keeping our hair in good condition, including reminding us to get it cut or trimmed every six to eight weeks and also- interestingly- if we’re trying to let our hair grow, we should use Mane and Tail shampoo, amongst other things. She then demonstrated how to curl hair using a G.H.D. and how to style an “Up” do. It was a very informative talk and the T.Y.s would like to thank Eleanor for taking time to call into us Lauren Mulvihill. Robbie’s Lunch On the 8th of May, Robbie, who had earlier this year demonstrated some cooking techniques to us, returned to cook our end of year lunch. At lunchtime, all the hungry T.Y.s gathered in the Home Economics room to eat Robbie’s freshly cooked meal. The students were all anxious to tuck into the tasty food. We had a selection of chicken goujons, sausages, chicken sandwiches, buffalo wings and vol-au-vent. The food looked mouth-watering and delicious and the girls dug in, cleaning their plates. Robbie had also baked mini muffins which were so tasty the basket was soon empty. We really enjoyed the lunch and would like to thank Robbie for that and the demonstration earlier in the year. Conach Gibson The Rapunzel Foundation On Monday, May 13th, the 1st and 2nd years were visited by Anna Furlong, founder of the Rapunzel Foundation. We learned all about Ms. Furlong’s journey from the day she first set foot inside her uncle’s salon to today when she runs a foundation to help those who suffer hair loss due to alopecia and chemotherapy. From the beginning, we all knew this would be a talk that would stay with us as it dealt with the problems of people, many of them young children, who suffer from hair loss. In 2008, while working with her uncle in his salon, she met a lady who was undergoing chemotherapy and wanted a wig. The only option the lady had found was to choose from a brochure, which seemed very unfair to Anna. Her next experience was the one that really inspired her to set up the Rapunzel Foundation. A six year old girl who had lost her hair due to alopecia came to Anna to cut her specialised wig, a Freedom wig. These wigs suction to the scalp allowing the wearer to carry on with life as normal but are only manufactured in New Zealand. The girl’s mother told Anna that there was a shortage of hair available for these wigs. This inspired Anna to set up the Rapunzel Foundation, encouraging people to grow their hair to twelve inches and donate it to the foundation. Anna told how these Freedom wigs change the lives of their wearers as they can swim, play sports and carry on normal lives. The donations also help as the wigs are very expensive and the money raised can fund the purchase of wigs. We found this talk very enlightening and appreciate Ms. Furlong coming to talk to us. Some T.Y. students were so impressed by Ms. Furlong’s talk that they are to grow their hair over the summer and donate it on return to school in September! Kate McGrath and Hannah Power 2.2
Vintage Car Run Sunday saw a great turn out for the Vintage Car Run in aid of the Lourdes Helper Group. Anyone who came down to the Lookout enjoyed a rare treat of a wonderful collection of cars and motorbikes. Thanks again to Eamonn Foley, his family and friends who organised this wonderful event.
