Mountain Climbing, World Book Day, Talent Show, Public Speaking Finals, Football Blitz, Munster Finals for Team 11th March 2013
T.Y. Gaisce Trip One of the main requirements for the Gaisce Award is to complete a two day, overnight “adventure journey” where you must hike 26-30 kilometres. On the 7th of February all us who are taking part in Gaisce headed to Wicklow. We stayed in a hostel close to the Wicklow Way where the scenery outside our window was stunning. Luckily for us, the rain stayed away and reports of snow on the mountains were greatly exaggerated because we were only there a short while when we took off on a hike through the woods. The first ten minutes were tough going- we thought we’d never reach the top of that first hill. However we managed to find the energy to make it up a mountain of 500m and get back to the hostel with very few casualties. We were all very impressed with ourselves when we were told we had walked from Dublin to Wicklow! We woke the next morning with quite a bit less energy than we had the day before for our six hour hike to the top of a taller 720 m mountain. The final few metres to the very top were covered in fog and we, totally drained of energy, had to band together to ensure no hiker was left behind, and reaching the top was the best feeling ever!
We stayed in Wicklow an extra night and woke on Friday morning tired, stiff and proud both of our hike and the “Harlem Shake” video we had made when we got back to the hostel. We spent that final day learning Bear Gyrll style survival skills, archery and climbing before playing the “unfair Mexican stand-off game”, so called because it’s unfair and was invented in Mexico! Everybody was falling asleep on the way home but it was a lot of fun and brought us a step closer to achieving our Bronze award. Lauren Mulvihill
World Book Day In recognition of World Book Day and in the ongoing promotion of literacy, our super S.N.A Mrs. Maria Curran and Ms. Cotter have organised various events. We recently had the poetry competition and want to thank Eurospar for sponsoring the wonderful prizes for this excellent competition.It’s good to see so many budding poets in our midst! At the moment we have “Literary Spies”, teachers on the lookout for students reading during break time, lunchtime etc. The readers are quizzed about their books, the names entered into a draw for prizes! First and second years are busy writing for a short story competition; I’ve read some and they are really excellent. We are constantly adding to our library and it is a pleasure to see so many bookworms availing of it! B.C.S. Factor Talent Show
On Thursday last, March 7th, two acts from the Ard Scoil travelled to Blackwater Community School, Lismore, to take part in the BCS talent show. A group of second year girls, Brona Coleman, Ellie Janes, SINEAD O’Donnell, Shannon Shepherd, Alana Coyne and Dawn Drummy were up first. They performed two contemporary songs, “Little Talks” by Monsters of Men and “Use Somebody” by the Kings of Leon. A traditional group also took part; Amy Faherty, Kate Faherty, Muireann O’Brien, Clara Mannion, Muireann Walsh and Hannah Power played. They performed two traditional pieces with a modern twist, while Muireann O’Brien danced a reel. Both groups did the school proud! On the day, some fifth and second year students travelled to Lismore with the acts to provide some friendly faces in the crowd. There were fifteen entries in the competition in total, varying from traditional music to contemporary music and even a hip-hop dance routine. The standard was excellent and the judges had a very hard job coming to a decision! First place went to a first year boy from Fermoy who dazzled the crowd with a beautiful rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream” from the musical “Les Miserables”, a very deserving winner. Chloe Keane Soroptomists's Public Speaking Competition The Munster Final of the Soroptimist's Public Speaking Competition was held in Bandon at the end of February. Mrs. Hughes, Principal, and Mrs. Simons, English teacher, attended with students Chloe Keane and Ciara Gildae. The girls appreciated the support of their families and friends. Both Ard Scoil represenatives performed very well on the day and were presented with their certificates and prizes by the National Soroptimist President.
First Year Football Blitz The first year girls of the Ard Scoil travelled to Rathgormack last Wednesday the 6th of March. The girls were divided into two teams and acquitted themselves very well. The Ard Scoil Cubs Team played three matches and then a semi final. We saw huge improvements in their performance despite losing the semi final. The Ard Scoil Lions Team enjoyed great success, making it to the final undefeated and beating Blackwater C.S. 6-5 to 1-2 in the semis. Unfortunately the final was a bridge too far as the girls lost 4-2 to 1-2 to the Friary, having put in a tremendous effort. The panel for the teams were: Shauna Coakley Ard Scoil Progresses to Munster Final On Monday the 4th of March Coachford Community School provided the opposition for this Munster semi-final match, which was played in Killeagh. Despite the cold weather the pitch was in good condition. Ard Scoil lost the toss but were happy to play against the wind in the first half. Corner forward Ellen Curran got Ard Scoil on the scoreboard with a well taken goal. Wing forward Kate McGrath added to that with Ard Scoil’s second goal of the match. Points from Kate McGrath and centre-forward Ciara Hurley and a further goal from Laura Cusack ended the first half with a score of 3-2 Ard Scoil and 0-3 Coachford. With the wind in the second half the Ard Scoil girls really opened up the play and with three consecutive points from Ciara Hurley and two well taken points from substitute Aisling Baumann the team began to pull away. Coachford tried to push forward, but with excellent saves from goalie Catherine Murray they were held in check. The half and full back line had plenty of possession and with this supplied the forwards with excellent ball. A further goal from wing forward Laura Cusack, two points from Ciara Hurley and a point from Kate McGrath put the match beyond the reach of Coachford. The Team: Subs: Coaches
