T.Y.s Present Cheque to Lions Club

Before the Christmas holidays, the T.Y.s gathered outside the Shopping Centre to raise money for the Dungarvan Lions Club by way of carol singing. Last Monday, The President of the Club, Mr.Des Power, along with another representative, Mr.Paul Clerkin, came to talk to us.

They explained the history of the Club and the work it does and presented us with a certificate and thanked us for raising funds for their Christmas appeal. They told us that the club is currently on the lookout for members of all ages and we’re delighted to have been able to give them some help with our carol singing when we raised €470.00!

T.Y.Retreat Day

On Friday the 25th, the T.Y.s finally discovered what was the purpose of the mysterious “Religious Fee” we had paid back in September. We gathered in school at 8.30and headed for a day’s retreat in Cork.

Nobody was entirely sure what we would be doing as we arrived at the centre. Most of us were waiting for a group of nuns to file out and teach us about the life of Jesus.

The day however, was more about relaxation than formal religious studies. Some found the time we spent meditating to be quite effective whilst others couldn’t really concentrate. Those who are not used to such an early start for the day felt a bit sleepy. During the rest of the day we were split into smaller groups wherein we attempted to discover more about ourselves and took part in a walking debate.

It was certainly an interesting day and was worth attending and it gave us time to be together in a non-class situation.

3.2 C.S.P.E. Action Project

On Friday, February 1st, as part of our third year C.S.P.E. action project we had invited Labour T.D. for Waterford, Ms. Ciara Conway to come and speak to us. This had involved organising and planning the event.

We divided into different groups to organise the event. This entailed writing to her and making the arrangements for her coming to the school. We were delighted that she accepted our invitation and all went smoothly.

We learned a little about her personal life and her life as a T.D.; what inspired her to get involved in politics, people she has met, Dail motions she has seen in the past or was involved in. She also spoke of her goals for the future. It was a pleasure to have her and we learned a lot; it will be a day to remember.

Most importantly, the event wouldn’t have happened at all without the incredible teamwork displayed by the 3.2 class.

Aisling Foley and Louise Conway.

The girls obviously enjoyed Ms Conway’s talk very much as evinced by the laughter, the many questions posed and the fact that they ignored the bell for break time and stayed on to hear more!

Good Win for Ard Scoil in Munster Schools Quarter Final

Carrigaline Community School provided the opposition for this quarter final match which was played in Ballinameela. Despite the wet weather of late, the pitch was in great condition.

Ard Scoil lost the toss but were happy to play against the wind in the first half. Neither side converted their opening chances but Kate McGrath got the Ard Scoil on the scoreboard with a well taken point. Both sides swopped scores with Carrigaline a point up coming close to half time. \just before the half-time whistle, Ellen Curran scored the first goal of the match and left the half-time score Ard Scoil 1-5, Carrigaline C.S. 6 points.

With the wind in the second half, the Ard Scoil girls really opened up the play and with a goal from Kate McGrath and 2 points from Lauren McGregor the team began to pull away. Carrigaline tried to push forward but were held well in check by the back and half back lines as with plenty of possession, the half backs and midfield were able to supply the forward with plenty of ball. Further goals from Catherine Murray, Shauna Coakley, Lauren McGregor and Ciara Hurley put the match beyond the reach of Carrigaline.

Ard Scoil Team; Goalie Catherine Murray,( Muireann Walsh second half), Ailin Power, Kayleigh Veale, Taylor Murray, Grace Heffernan, Emma Gildea, Ornaith Keane, Caitriona O’Brien, Hannah Power, Ciara Hurley, Lauren McGregor, Kate McGrath, Laura Cusack, Ellen Curran, Nicole Fernecombe.
Subs; Catherine Murray for Nicole Ferncombe; Clodagh Curran for Ailin Power; Shauna Coakley for Ellen Curran; Amy O’Riordan for Laura Cusack. Sarah Supple, Aisling Baumann, Stella Queally.

La Fheile Bride

On Friday the first of February, we celebrated the feast day of Saint Brigid. Many of the classes made traditional crosses during religion class as they learned a little about our national saint.

Bothar. 3.3. C.S.P.E. Action Project

Last Wednesday, Jenny Meehan of Bothar came to our school to tell us about their work and what happens to the money we donate to the charity.

The talk was organised by 3.3 class for our C.S.P.E. project. WE were divided into groups and  each group was put in charge of organising something. The pupils of first and second year heard the talk first and , apart from a little technical hitch, all went very well. After break the 3rd years heard the talk. It was very interesting and everyone learned a lot of new information about the work of Bothar in developing countries.

Afterwards some of us went around to all the classes to see what they thought of the talk. The thing that most people remembered was that they put in-calf heifers on planes!...and all the training they give the families before they receive the animal.

We also collected money to give a small donation to Bothar.

We had a party on Thursday to celebrate finishing our action project. We will continue to collect money into next week to increase the size of our donation. We know Jenny will put this money to good use and we hope that she will come back in the future to talk to us again.
