Art Winner, Parents’ Council, Amnesty International, Edmund Burke Prize, Christmas Competition, Comhairle na nÓg, Public Speaking 19th December 2012 Credit Union Art Winner Congratulations to Katie Leahy who came first in this year’s local Credit Union Art Competition. Katie’s painting was based on the theme “Celebrate Community Colour”. Her painting was also successful at chapter level and she is now through to the National Final with her picture of Katie Taylor with her gold medal. Well done to Katie and Art teacher Mrs. Mary Foley.
Parents’ Council Present Cheque A huge thank you to our wonderful Parents’ Council who presented a cheque for €8,000 to School Principal Mrs. Dorothy Hughes. They work untiringly to raise funds for the school. One fund raiser is the Bingo on Monday nights in the school and we would like to encourage parents and friends of the Ard Scoil to come and join in the fun and help the school at 8.15 .
The Law Society and Amnesty International Competition Winners
3.3 C.S.P.E. Class won third prize in a competition run by the Law Society and Amnesty International. The task was to design and create a poster about discrimination of people with mental health problems. We also had to write a piece about our idea, the design and the making of the poster. Four students from the class, Jane Allen, Grace Whelan, Nicole Wojczyk and Anna Whelan travelled to Dublin with teacher, Ms. J. Foley to attend the prize winners ceremony. At the law Society, the prizewinning posters were displayed and refreshments were provided.
Speakers included Colm O’Gorman, C.E.O of Amnesty International Ireland who spoke of his experiences with psychiatric institutions in Ireland. Barbra O’Sullivan spoke of her own experiences suffering with a mental health problem and then she presented certificates to the prize winners. For third place we received a cheque for €250. During the presentations, we enjoyed cello music and contemporary dance and an interesting poetry reading by Colm Keegan.
There were 80 entries and it was interesting to see the posters which won first and second prizes. Overall it was a very enjoyable day and we were delighted to receive a prize after all the hard work that was put into the poster. Anna Whelan The Edmund Burke Prize Principal, Mrs Dorothy Hughes was delighted to receive the news recently that not one but two of our students had been awarded the Edmund Burke prize. This is awarded to students based on their Junior Cert results and was awarded to Catherine Bowen, T.Y. for her results in the 2012 Junior Cert. The prize was also awarded to 5th year student, Clodagh Keane based on her results in the 2011 Junior Cert. Well done girls.
Dungarvan Chamber of Commerce Christmas Poster and Slogan Competition The Chamber fo Commerce recently ran a poster and slogan competition the aim of which was to encourage people to support local businesses during the festive season. Students in the Ard Scoil took to the task with great energy and submitted 97 entries! Congratulations to Ciara O’Brien, T.Y. who took second place and Maebh Power, 3.1 who took third prize in the poster competition. Congratulations girls!
Waterford County Comhairle na nÓg Meeting On Friday 1st of December, representatives, Kayleigh Veale TY, Aisling Foley and Guoda Mozeryte 3rd Yr and Kayla McCarey 1st Yr went to the Comhairle na nÓg meeting in Lawlors Hotel. On arrival we registered and were given our information packs. An opening speech and an insight of what we would be doing was then relayed to us. We had a welcoming speech from the county mayor Cllr. Billy Kyne. We were given an overview of the work of the Comhairle. Everyone then took part in “ice-breakers” to get to know others from different schools. The result was a more relaxed gathering. In groups we discussed topics e.g. cyber-bullying. We included solutions that we thought Comhairle could contribute. This lead to some interesting finds. A synopses of other projects the Comhiarle has taken part in over the years included the most recent one, “Mind Matters” DVD. After breaking for lunch we had some “refreshers”, and then back into our groups to discuss a new topic: Facilities for young people. Again the solutions were interesting and each group proposed theirs to the whole gathering. To finish off, we ran through all the different things we had discussed and were given information on how to join the Comhairle. We enjoyed the day and came home with a better understanding of the organisation. I know I would be interested to get involved in it further. Comhairle na nÓg is a group of young people who want to make a difference. Aisling Foley Sorpotomist Public Speaking Contest On Thursday December 13th, six Ard Scoil girls, Ciara Gildea, Aoife Murphy, Chloe Keane, Kayleigh Veale, Catherine Bowen and Lauren Mulvihill participated in the first round of the National Public Speaking Competition held by Soroptomist International in Lawlors Hotel. Mrs. Anne Higgins organised the contest and presented the winners with lovely prizes on the night. The best Research Award, The Ciara Meehan Trophy, was awarded to Aoife Murphy, 5th Yr. The winners will go on to the Provincial Final in February: Ciara Gildea, 5th Yr and Chloe Keane, 5th Yr with runner up Lauren Mulvihill, 4th Yr. Congratulations, girls.
