Cancer Research Donation, O’Duffy Cup at Ard Scoil, TY News, Work Experience 2012, Monday Night Bingo 3rd December 2012 Mr. Gordon Watson Accepts Cheque for Cancer Research. Mrs. Norma O’Driscoll and Mrs. Ina O’Sullivan with the help of the 5th years recently ran a very successful Pink Picnic day as part of the Breast cancer awareness month. It was a fun day and the girls raised €620. On Friday, Mr. Gordon Watson, the Waterford surgeon who set up the Breast Health clinic in the Regional hospital, came to talk to T.Y. 5th and 6th students and to accept the cheque on behalf of Waterford Surgical Research Association. T.Y. student Lauren Mulvihill wrote the following account of his talk.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, and every year in the Árd Scoil we organise a “Pink Day” to raise money for breast cancer research where we all wear pink and take part in various happenings around the school. This October, we managed to raise almost €700 and were visited by Dr. Gordon Watson on Friday 30th of November so we could present him with the cheque. Dr. Watson gave us a very informative talk on detecting breast cancer and other potential problems. The money is going towards a new programme in Waterford that helps men and women diagnosed with cancer with any effects of their illness such as depression and low self-esteem. We’re all very proud to have been able to help with this as it’s a very important programme. The O’Duffy Cup comes to the Ard Scoil On Thursday, P.E. teacher Ms. Fiona Rocheford who was a member of the Wexford All Ireland Camogie Champions team brought the O’Duffy Cup to the school. There was great excitement as girls lined up to have their photo taken with Ms. Rocheford and the cup!
TY News The T.Y. students returned to school on Monday following two weeks of work experience. They’re busy finishing various projects and preparing for the annual Christmas craft fair. Work Experience 2012 Months of planning and weeks of even more intense planning finally came to an end on the 12th of November, when the Transition Years finally embarked on our two weeks’ of work experience. We were all heading for what was to be for most of us our first proper taste of the working world that Monday morning, feeling nervous and in some cases jealous of the people who were bragging about being able to go home at half past twelve every day that week. Work Experience is one of the main parts of any Transition Year course and we had heard nothing but positive stories about it before trying it out for ourselves. The two TY classes were scattered around both Co. Waterford and Ireland in general, with some students heading up to Limerick and as far as Dublin for a week. Our workplaces ranged from shops and schools to chemists and hospitals to tattoo studios and restaurants, and we all had plenty of stories to tell about our victories and failures when we met up with our friends at lunchtime. Most of us were hard at work for the week and couldn’t wait to crawl into bed and stay there once Friday came around (which I presume a lot of us did). After what was for the majority of us an excellent start, we all set off for our second week of work experience on Monday the 19th feeling a bit more confident and more prepared for what was ahead. After our two weeks were up, and a few of us getting close to tears when we had to leave our workplaces, we arrived back in school full of chat and wanting to know how everyone got on. There were definitely some people who felt they were ready to go out a find a job right there and then (although that’s easier said than done), and I hope the businesses in town are prepared for all the CVs they’ll be receiving from us this Summer. On behalf of all the TYs, I want to thank all the shops and businesses and companies that provided us with work experience and also Mr. Collins for putting so much effort into organising everything. It was a fantastic fortnight and one we’ll definitely remember for a long time!
