Win for Junior Footballers, Quiz with C.B.S., Miraculous Medals, Pink Day, Manual Handling Day, History Project 29th October 2012
Convincing Win for Ard Scoil Junior Footballers The Junior footballers travelled to Kilbehenny with their mentor Mrs. Ashe to play Scoil Mhuire agus Ide in the Munster Schools’ Football Championships. From the start,the Ard Scoil team was in command and early points from Ciara Hurley, Kate McGrath and Lauren McGregor settled the team. Niamh Whyte and Sarah Supple also got on the scoreboard to leave the half time score of 10 points to 1 point. The Ard Scoil had it all their own way in the second half and goals from Lauren McGregor (2), Ciara Hurley (3) and Sarah Walsh (1) ensured a victory of 6-14 to 1-2. With roll on roll off substitution all 25 members of the panel played their part in this win. Ard Scoil will play Cashel L.S. in the next round. Well done girls! T.Y. Quiz with the C.B.S.
ON October 24th, the T.Y. students had a quiz with their contemporaries in the C.B.S. It was a great afternoon and all mixed in well. We would like to thank Mr. Collins,Mr. Scanlon and Mrs.Stack for organising this event. We had joint winners; T.Y.1. Michael Culloo, Amy Yellop,Lauren Mulvihill ; T.Y.2 Catherine Bowen, Coady Power and Daniel Coleman. The two runners up were T.Y.1 Rob Shine, Jenny Wade, and Courtney Taylor; T.Y. 2 Billy Looby, Taylor Murray and Maria Ciabas Garcia. It was a great experience and we look forward to doing it again. Lauren McGregor and Niamh Whyte. Miraculous Medal Ceremony It is a tradition in our school since SR. Rosario was here that all first years would receive a Miraculous Medal. On Monday, October 22nd, our new chaplain, Fr. John Harris blessed the medals and briefly explained the history of the medals before distributing them to the girls. Mrs Colette Power, Deputy Principal, formally welcomed Fr. Harris and told the girls about Sr. Rosario and her strong devotion to Our Lady. She thanked Sr. Philomena for providing the medals and also welcomed Sr. Eileen who represented the Mercy Sisters. With little traditions like these, we help the girls to reengage with their Faith. Pink Day
As October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, our Year Head Mrs. O’Driscoll, with the help of Mrs. O’Sullivan, decided it would be a good idea to raise awareness of this within the school. This has become an annual event in the school but this year, Mrs. O’Driscoll added the idea of a Pink Picnic! Each Year Head brought their classes to the picnic at a suitable time. We decided the picnic would take place in the senior hall which was decorated in pink. Each student brought their own picnic to the hall and shared it with their friends. Each student donated € 2 and received a pink ribbon.
We raised over €500 for the West Waterford Hospice. Everybody had a wonderful day while raising funds for this very worthy charity.
Jemma Kiely and Michelle Barry T.Y. Manual Handling Day On Friday, all T.Y. students spent a day with Mr. Liam Moore of Honeywell Engines and Systems to learn safety techniques which they will need in the work place. After a day of learning various safety measures they took a test. Roisin Leonard, Orla Hickey and Jessica O’Shea came out on top and were given Cross pens. Thank you to Mr. Moore for his instruction and his gifts to the girls. T.Y.B Sand Beat F.M. History Project On Wedsnesday, October 24th the T.Y.Bs had a visit from Orla Rapple of BEAT F.M. fame. Orla was in the Ard Scoil to record the girls for a programme which she produced called “What We’re Famous for.” Each student had to research a place in their own locality WITHOUT USING THE INTERNET! and put together a presentation based on that research. The best of these recordings will be broadcast on Beat F.M. Breakfast programme everyt day from the 8th of January 2013. The whole experience of doing the research and being recorded for radio was an invaluable one for the T.Y.Bs and each student will receive a certificate of participation from Beat F.M. at the end of the year. Congratulations to the girls and their teacher Mrs. Dennehy.
