U16½ Camogie Blitz, Farewell to Fr. Paul Waldron, Blue and White Day 8th October 2012
U16½ Camogie Blitz On Wednesday 3rd October, the u16½ Camogie team travelled to De la Salle GAA pitch to compete in a Blitz. On the day five teams including Ard Scoil travelled to compete against one another. It was a cold morning but despite this the Ard Scoil girls were raring and ready to go and play their first match of the day against a school from Carrick. During this match the first years who were playing for the Ard Scoil for their first time showed how much skill they had and how well they were able to score. The players who scored in this match were Kate McGrath, Ciara Hurley, Michaela Hickey, Sibeal Duggan, Ailbhe Looby and Aisling Baumann. Katie Ferncombe made some great saves throughout the match and had great help from the backline. The Ard Scoil proved to be too strong for the Carrick team and came out deserving winners. The second game was against St. Anne’s from Tipperary. It was a very close game and both teams were evenly matched .The girls were very unlucky to lose this game by just one point. The next game was against Pobail Scoil na Trionoide from Youghal. The girls were tired during this game as they had not gotten a break since their first match. Although we did manage to score 1-02, Pobail Scoil proved to be the stronger team in this game. The second last match we played was against the Mercy from Waterford City. This was a tough game but the girls gave all they had. There was a lot of scoring chances for the girls but the Mercy keeper proved to be very strong stopping all shots the girls fired at her. The back line did a superb job in putting pressure on the opposition and kept them on a low score line. After this match ended we found out we had reached the plate final against St. Anne’s, the team we had previously lost to by one point. Once we had a small bite to eat and regained some of our energy, we then went back onto the pitch and did a small warm up before the match began. The fact we lost by one point in the last game to St. Anne’s made us want to win this match even more. There was some great skill shown throughout this match by every player. The Full backline of Kayleigh Veale and Ellen Curran cleared every ball that came their way, although not much got past the half backline of Clodagh Curran, Taylor Murray and Nadine Browne. Kate McGrath and Ciara Hurley showed their level of fitness with all the running they did in the midfield area. All five forwards played a great part in this game getting plenty of scores. The girls who came on as substitutes also showed that they were just as good as any of the girls on the field. Well Done to Mrs. Pickering and the girls! We were saddened when we recently discovered that one of our chaplains, Fr. Paul Waldron was to leave us to take up his new post at the Cathedral in Waterford. Fr. Paul has been with us for seven years and in that time he has officiated at many class masses and prayer services. Mrs. Colette Power, vice principal, reminded us how he always induced an atmosphere of calm when he visited the students during exam times. On Wednesday, the junior classes gathered in the junior hall to bid farewell to Fr. Paul who, as they said, kept them in touch with God. Mrs. Teresa Daly made a presentation to Fr. Paul on behalf of the Parents’ Council. He will be sadly missed by all in the school community and we wish him all the very best in his new post, Dungarvan’s loss is Waterford’s gain! On Friday, to support the Waterford Ladies Intermediate Football team which contested the All Ireland final in Dublin on Sunday, the Ard Scoil became a sea of blue and white. As two present pupils and five past pupils were members of the team, everyone managed to find some blue and white to wear, with face paint added by some! A bus of supporters travelled to the match but sadly it was not Waterford’s day. Well done to the team for reaching the final and I’m sure we’ll see them back in top form again next year!
