Ard Scoil Turns Gold and Purple to Honour All Ireland Camogie Champion.

Passersby may have thought they were in Wexford last week as they passed the Ard Scoil and saw it bedecked in the colours of that county! Staff and students saluted our P.E. and Irish teacher, Ms. Fiona Rocheford, following her team’s win against Cork in the All Ireland Senior Camogie final.  My thanks to Mrs. Ashe for the following report of the match.

All Ireland final day in Croke Park is always a noisy and colourful affair and last Sunday week’s Senior Camogie  final between Wexford and Cork was no exception. A very close game was expected with Cork slight favourites as they had beaten Wexford earlier in the year. Wexford, however, were determined to hold on to their All Ireland title and make it three in a row.

The sides were very evenly matched in the first half with Wexford just shading it at half time. The second half began with a Cork onslaught on the Wexford goal but they withstood the pressure, clearing ball after ball up field to the forwards where Fiona Rocheford (now teaching P.E. and Irish in the Ard Scoil) was just one of the players causing difficulty for the Cork backs. A goal by Wexford was answered immediately by a Cork goal and it seemed it would be a nail biting finish but Wexford scored another goal and came out comfortable winners.

Fiona scored two points, was involved in the run up to both Wexford goals and was unlucky not to be awarded a penalty as she was fouled while bearing down on the Cork goal. It was a superb display and an inspiration to all our camogie  players in the Ard Scoil.

A Cake to Celebrate

New heights for Kate McGrath in Cork.

Well done to Kate McGrath and Ellen Curran who played with Waterford in the All Ireland under fourteen blitz on All Ireland Saturday.

On Wednesday, Kate McGrath, 2nd year, travelled to Cork to Cork to compete in the Munster Schools Multi Events. Kate competed at junior although she is a year young for this event; practise will stand her in good stead for next year. Kate had a new personal best of 1m.40 in the High Jump to win her pool and also ran a very creditable 800m in 2.40.

Well done to Hannah Power and Stella Queally who assisted in running the event.

Blue and White Day on Friday October 4th.

To show our support for our present students, Aoife Landers and Becky Hurley, and our past students, Grainne Enright, Roisin Tobin, Shona Curran, Tricia Kiely, Aoife McGovern who are members of the Waterford Intermediate team who will play in the All Ireland Football final in Croke Park on October 7th, the Ard Scoil will hold a blue and white day on Friday, October 5th.

First Year Football Blitz.

The Ard Scoil will take part in the Waterford Schools County Blitz on Wednesday October 28th. As we have so many first years interested in playing football, 3 teams will represent the Ard Scoil.

T.Y.students at Storytelling Southeast.

On Wednesday and Thursday the T.Y. students will be involved in the Festival as they will be telling stories to Junior and Senior Infants pupils of local schools in St. Mary’s Church of Ireland. Church. First year students have also become involved by making pictures of characters from well-known tales to adorn the walls. I hope the T.Y.s will not be too exhausted after their day at the Ploughing Festival!

Fundraising Afternoon Tea this Saturday.

If you have not already visited the Charity Vintage Tea Rooms in St. Mary’s Church of Ireland, this Saturday is the afternoon to taste the delights and soak up the atmosphere of this delightful spot.  I recently enjoyed afternoon tea here and was only sorry I hadn’t discovered this gem earlier in the summer! Ria and her team were so welcoming and the sandwiches and cakes were delicious.

Each Saturday the proceeds go to a different charity and this week’s funds raised will go to the Ard Scoil. We are delighted to be able to host this event and must thank St. Mary’s C. of I. for giving us this opportunity.

Please come along between 2.00 and 5.30 to support our school. As well as the delicious teas, there will be face painting and story telling for children, so it is an outing for the whole family.
