Success for Ard Scoil Athletes at Aviva Irish Schools Track and Field Championships
4th June 2012
Tullamore was the venue on Saturday last for an exciting day of athletic events as the Aviva Irish Schools Championships were held in this well know athletics venue. All the events were finals as only the top three in the provincial championships qualified for the All Ireland.
Ard Scoil had three representatives competing. The first events got under way at 9am and Laura Connors was in action straight away in the Inter Girls High Jump. Laura cleared the opening height of 1m 40 with little difficulty and cleared each height up to 1m55 on her first attempt. This was the deciding height in the competition as nine of the competitors cleared this height but only three on their first attempts. Shannon Dalkins St Mary’s New Ross went on to clear 1m60 and win the competition and Alex Catherwood Ashfield Girls School and Laura Connors by virtue of their first time clearance at 1m55 were joint runners up. This was excellent jumping from Laura and equalled her personal best.
At the other end of the arena at the same time, Ailin Power was competing in her first national championships taking part in the Junior Girls Hammer. Ailin threw 28.08m to qualify for the final of the event and finished in 5th with this mark.
Last in action was Ciara Scanlan who was making her final appearance for the Ard Scoil as she sits her leaving cert next week. Ciara was competing in the Senior Girls Hammer. Ciara has for some time been moving close to the 40m mark but she got everything spot on, on Saturday when she opened her throwing with a 41m effort. Twice during the competition Ciara surpassed this mark and finished with 43m 28 to take the bronze medal.
