International Show-Jumping Success, Sporting Achievements, Festival of Food, Lismore Art Exhibition 23rd April 2012 International Show-Jumping Success for Laura Connors.
T.Y student Laura Connors recently travelled to Fontainebleau in France as a member of the Irish Pony Show Jumping team and she has given me this account of her exciting and successful trip. "We broke our journey in Dover before continuing to Paris where we went to the races. On Thursday we had to trot our ponies in front of the vets who checked that they were sound. On Friday we walked the course at 7.30 and the competition started at 8.00. We walked the course with our chef d’equipe, Tom Slattery. The competition was in two phases and I was 11th to go. On Saturday, we had a one round speed class and on Sunday was the Grand Prix. My pony is a seven year old so I was jumping in the CSIP 6/7 class which meant jumping at 1.20 on Saturday and 1.25 0n Sunday for the Grand Prix. In the evenings we were able to sit out and enjoy a barbecue as the weather was so fine. All the Irish decorated our stables with flags and this added to the great atmosphere. I came third in Friday’s competition and was very happy and proud to have done so well. My pony’s name is Ballynoe Fear Bui but the French announcers had no trouble pronouncing his name." Well done to Laura who has represented the Ard Scoil at equestrian events and I’m sure she will have many more successes in the future. Sporting Success for Present and Past Pupils. Past pupils Zoe Scanlon and Claire Collins were very successful in the recent Munster Intervarsity Championships. Zoe, who’s a student at W.I.T., took gold at the discus and javelin and silver in the shot. Claire, who is studying in U.C.C., won the high jump competition. First year students Hannah Power and Kate McGrath have been playing football with the Waterford under 14 team while Siobhan Nugent, Aoife Landers and Aileen Gallagher have been playing with the Waterford Under 18 camogie team which recently defeated Kerry in the Munster B Championship. Congratulations to all our sporting stars. West Waterford Festival of Food. On Saturday, April 17th, a workshop entitled “Busy with Biscuits” for Primary School pupils was held in the Ard Scoil. In excess of 160 young boys and girls attended and enjoyed a great deal of fun cooking and decorating biscuits. A super army of helpers assisted to ensure this was a very enjoyable and successful morning. Ard Scoil 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th year students were joined by 4 students from St. Angela’s home economics Teacher Training College, H O’Sullivan, A. Hayes, A Power and A.M.nCoughlan. Two past pupils who are studying at the college, Clodagh Cronin and Eilis Kiely were joined by two student teachers who have recently spent some weeks in the Ard Scoil, Johanna McCarthy and Jessica O’Donnell. Principal, Mrs Dorothy Hughes and H.E. teacher, Ms. Carmel Fox greeted the students and welcomed them to the school. Lismore Castle Schools Art Exhibition. Last week Ard Scoil 2nd and 3rd year students travelled to Lismore Castle with Art teacher, Mrs. Mary Foley, to experience the Waterford schools’ art exhibition.
On arrival at the castle, the students were greeted by Jennifer, the gallery’s curator, who lead them to the exhibition area where she introduced them to the Caribbean concept by means of a power point presentation, which showed many different facets of colourful island life. This was followed by images of the work of world famous artists, some of which really intrigued the girls. After this, they had the opportunity to view the art works on exhibit including many by our own 4th, 5th and 6th year art students.
Jennifer then gave the girls paper, chalks, pencils and charcoal sticks and invited them to create their own works of art, inspired by what they could see around the gallery. They took to it with enthusiasm and it was wonderful to see the many varied pictures they produced. Alas, all too soon it was time to leave and head back to Dungarvan, with the girls looking forward to seeing their own work on display in the gallery in future years.
