2nd April 2012

Easter Holidays

It’s the Easter Holidays, time for all to recharge the batteries and for Leaving and Junior Cert. students to revise before the final run up to their exams. The past few weeks have been hectic as usual with so many activities.

T.Y. Cookery Competition

Winners of Cookery Competition Clodagh Keane and Sarah Craddock Davina Muntjewerff and Alice Genouel Runners Up

On Wednesday morning, the finalists for the cookery competition gathered in Ms Fox’s kitchen to cook and present their dishes to be judged by Mrs. Eunice Power of Powerscourt House.

Eunice was very impressed by the variety of dishes and the skills displayed by the girls. The winners, Clodagh Keane and Sarah Craddock, cooked a delicious dish of fresh salmon. Joint runners up were Dearbhla Whelan with Laura Connors and Davina Muntjewerff with Alice Genouel. Well done to all the girls!

First Year Success

Well done to all the First Year students who completed the RTE 1/DCU First Year Fitness Challenge, under the direction of Ms Emillie Pickering. All students did very well and improved their overall fitness over the last 6 weeks. Best of luck in the overall National Competition – winners to be announced after Easter.

Fun Run

Third Years

First Years

On Friday 30th, the Parents’ Council organised a Fun Run to raise funds for the school. The theme this year was Super Heroes and ensured many amusing costumes were devised for the day. Luckily the fine weather held up as Wonder Woman and fellow heroes headed off on this sponsored run.

The girls put in a great effort to raise funds for the school. The wonderful Parents Council had organised many wonderful prizes. Everyone who brought in €10 was entered in a draw. Chloe O’Donnell won the Notebook, Lauren McGregor won a phone and Tara Quilty, who brought in the most sponsorship, was given a voucher. Thanks to all the sponsors and to our Parents Council for organising this event.

First Years

Women in Shakespeare

Cast and Crew

On Thursday, after weeks of rehearsals, the T.Y. students, under the direction of past pupil Una Power, performed scenes from Shakespeare featuring some of the dramatist’s great women characters.

Originally it was planned that the girls would perform “Much Ado About Nothing” but due to unavoidable problems, they had to adapt to a new format, and they did so with great style and verve.

On Thursday afternoon, they had their first full run through as a dress rehearsal, when they performed for the first and second year classes. This insured ironing out any possible glitches so that when they performed that night, it was a seamless production.

Witches Jessica Bannon, Ciara Gildea, Davina Muntjewerff and Dearbhla Whelan Ellen Power (Nerissa) and Emma Casey (Portia) Chloe Keane (Lady Macbeth) Kate Curran (Sexton) and Aoife Murphy (Ophelia)

The show opened with three scenes from “Much Ado”. This was followed by “Romeo and Juliet”, which was shown on the big screen as a film using silhouette puppets and images relating to the famous “balcony” scene. Each scene was introduced by an explanatory note on the big screen, which briefly outlined the plot and the upcoming scene. We must thank our IT whizz, Jessica Troy, who produced these introductions and handled the audio visuals on the night.

Next, we saw Portia’s famous speech to her husband Brutus, from Julius Caesar. Unlike the other scenes, where the actors were dressed in contemporary clothes, Portia appeared as a Roman Statue!

Aoife Power (Portia) and Kyle Flynn (Brutus)

During the intermission, we were served refreshments by our Parents Council, who are always on hand at Ard Scoil events.

The Second Act began with scenes of the Weird Sisters from Macbeth. These ‘rock chick’ witches held the audience spellbound! Alongside the witches, Lady Macbeth delivered her chilling speech, wherein she discusses the planned murder of King Duncan.

Then we had a scene from the “Merchant of Venice”, with which all students were familiar through their studies. This scene, where Portia and Nerissa discuss the various suitors who have come to woo Portia, was shown as a ‘girlie sleepover’, with the girls gossiping and reading magazines on a duvet!

In complete contrast to this, the play ended with a performance of Ophelia’s “mad” scene from Hamlet.

Following the performance Una thanked Principal Mrs Dorothy Hughes, for allowing her to direct the girls; Year Head and Tutors Ms Carmel Fox, Ms Vera O’Brien and Ms Emillie Pickering for allowing her into their classes to speak to the girls; Mrs Magaret Dennehy for her help in auditions; Mr Collins, Mrs Foley, Ms Neylin, Mrs Simons and all the teachers who helped her stage the show.

Cast with Director Una Power

Especial thanks to our hero from the C.B.S., Kyle Flynn, who acted in two very different scenes, attended all rehearsals and was not fazed by the intercom going off during the dress rehearsal, or the attention of many young ladies!! You were great Kyle! Thanks also to James Queally, who provided the voice of Romeo, and I can’t forget the support of Seanie Kiely!

Una also thanked fellow past pupil, Tara Roche, who assisted her throughout the production and who put together the Romeo and Juliet scene. Tara assisted at rehearsals, in finding props and worked the light desk for the performances.

Bravissimo to the T.Y. classes, all of whom were involved in some way or another, and displayed great commitment and creativity.
