Retirement & Welcome, Sport Congratulations, Green Schools Award, Kilkenny Enterprise Trip, Cairde Girl Training, Pilates 19th March 2012 Retirement After many years of service to the Ard Scoil, Mrs Jean O’Donovan recently retired. Jean taught P.E. and Irish in the school and we wish her a long and happy retirement. Welcome We would like to welcome Ms Fiona Rochford to the staff as she takes up the post vacated by Mrs Jean O’Donovan. Fiona hails from Wexford and plays both camogie and football for her county, and was on the team which won the All Ireland last year. Sport – Congratulations Congratulations to Kate McGrath and Hannah Power (first year), and Laura Cusack and Ciara Hurley (second year), who were members of the Waterford Under 14 Football team which recently beat Limerick in Bruff. Ciara was team Captain and Kate scored a goal and a point. Grace Heffernan (second year) was also on the panel. Well done also to Cliona Ryan (second year), who came 37th in the recent All-Ireland Cross Country Championships, which were held in Galway. TY News Ready! Chef! Go!
As part of the Waterford Festival of Food, our T.Y. students Clodagh Keane and Caitriona Slevin represented the Ard Scoil in the Inter-schools cookery competition. This was an arduous task as they were given previously unknown ingredients and just 20 minutes to prepare a dish! All this was performed in front of an audience, judges and chefs, whilst they also dealt with questions from the presenter and the gaze of TV cameras. The girls won the Green Schools award – very well done to them!! Kilkenny Enterprise Trip
On Thursday the 15th of March, on a not so bright but definitely early morning, sixteen of us TY students and our Business teacher, Ms. Gleeson, set off to Kilkenny to compete in the Mini Company Get Up and Go competition. We arrived about half nine at the Springhill Hotel and were amazed when we entered the huge hall and saw the amount of students there and the beautiful chandelier. We were given our table numbers and our first task was to set up out stalls. Once everyone had arrived and was set up we were greeted by the TY Coordinator for all of Ireland, who then split each mini company into three. The first group had to go to a discussion group and speak with other students about their experiences. The next group was to man the stalls and answer questions from students and judges, and the final group was given a task sheet and was to go around to all the other stalls and fill in the sheet. We had an hour at each task and then rotated onto the next one. Lunch time at last! A small but delicious free lunch was provided consisting of sausages, chips and chicken which we all devoured quite happily. After this we had time to wander around and talk to all the other groups. They were an interesting mix of people from Limerick, Tipperary and Laois and we all had many new friends by the time the day was over. At the end of the day awards were given for impressive stalls, marketing, originality, environmental sustainability and then first, second and third. While no Ard Scoil girls came home with a trophy we all came home with some new friends, profits, some presents form the other stalls and smiles on our faces. The judges were right when they said that in the end we were all winners. Emma Casey Cairde Girl Training On Tuesday 6th of March, a group of TYs went to Scala in Cork for a Cáirde Girl training day. We left at about 8 and travelled to their new building at Castle Road where we were greeted with tea or coffee to revive us after our long journey and because another group from Clonmel were yet to arrive. Once they arrived we played “Fruit Salad”, a game which has seemed to follow us almost everwhere since first year, but is still one of the more enjoyable ways to begin a morning! We were introduced to the very friendly leaders then divided into four groups and told to what makes a good leader, where you would find leaders and examples. Needless to say there were some very interesting examples, not to mention drawings accompying them. We were then told to write down who is our role model and say why we admire them. We could keep it to ourselves or share it with the group but you had to write down someone. Later we went back into our previous groups and each group was taken to a smaller room. We were given a large packet of straws and a container of pins and told to make a beautiful, tall and self supporting sculpture. It seemed like an impossible task and yet it was surprising how well we all managed to organise ourselves and create something from simple straws and pins. Next we did a comunication exercise. Communication is often difficult at the best of times, but these were all worst case scenarios. We had to comunicate with another person in the group who took it in turns to ignore us, interupt and pretend to not understand anything. It was tough going and it helped show us to try to keep our patience in certain situations. Finally, we meditated together. It was a bit hard for some of the more lively people to sttle down but we got there in the end. It was a very calming end to the day. I hope that the skills we learned here will be very useful to us next year as Cáirde Girls. Ciara Gildea Pilates On Thursday 8th of March, Ty A girls from Ard Scoil na nDeise took up an new module, Pilates. The girls had previously been doing Self Defense and First Aid, both of which the girls thoroughly enjoyed. Once these modules had ended, their wonderful TY coordinator, Mrs. Fox, organized the girls to take part in Pilate sessions in town. The girls really had no idea what to expect as none of them had taken part in it before. Anticipations ran high as they took the walk down the town to the centre. Once there the girls got in and got settled and set up. They each grabbed a mat and were raring to go. The class consisted of a number of different stretches and activities, which some girls found challenging, but all in all it was a great laugh. Their TY coordinator Mrs. Fox was quite anxious about the girls not enjoying it, but it was a great success and the girls are really looking forward to next week’s class. Ayeshaanna Troy.
