As well as receiving an “e” book, Clara’s essay is published in “Dispatches from the Developing World” which was launched at Newman House by Mr. Tom Arnold,C.E.O. of Concern Worldwide. Well done to Ciara and her teacher, Mrs. Ciara Lucey.
Soroptimists Dungarvan Art Exhibition.
Soroptimist International Dungarvan and District held an Art “Have you Got Talent” competition in Lawlor’s Hotel on Saturday, November 1st. Mr. John O’Connor, Course Leader in W.I.T. judged the competition.
“Andrea Foley’s Red Rose is very well executed and shows a great command of drawing, painting and observational skill, while “Michael Jackson ”, by Chanelle O’Regan is an excellent sculpture of the famous singer, and shows a very mature grasp of 3 dimensional techniques. Her methodology of developing the work was very strong.
In this instance however, it is the work of Tabitha Alexander that shows the strongest range of skill level in her presentation of various types of Fowl and she is to be congratulated on painting a very accomplished picture of three geese. This painting, in my opinion, is the winner of the competition.”
Mr. O’Connor also commended the work of Angela McIntosh, T.Y. Well done to Art Teacher, Mrs. Mary Foley and all her students. Tabitha won a 7” WIFI Tablet as first prize.
Many thanks are due to Carmel Keith and the Soroptimists who organised this competition.
First Year Trip to see the Cork Pops Orchestra.
It all started on a miserable day, the 11th of November. But it would take more than lashing rain and sale force winds to dampen the spirits of Ard Scoil na nDeise’sfirst years. We were going to Cork to see an orchestra and to go shopping in Mahon Point.
We left school on a huge bus and had great fun on the journey to Cork. We arrived at Mahon Pont about 10.15 and went around lots of shops and went to eat in the Food Court.
We went on to the City Hall to hear the Cork pops Orchestra. They started off by introducing all the instruments. I like the double bass. They played some classical music first and then some modern music. We all sang along to “Don’t Stop Believing” and “Ola”. It was great fun!
Our teachers, Mrs Lucey, Mrs. Curran, Mrs. O’Donovan and Ms. Fahey accompanied us. After the performance, they allowed us off gallivanting again; this time in Penney’s for some more “retail therapy” before our trip home.
The drive home passed quickly as we now had so much to talk about. We had a great day, a memorable one at that – our first ever outing as a class in Ard Scoil na nDeise!

Dr. Alice Coffey, Guest Speaker at Awards Night.
Our guest speaker for our Annual Awards Night at Ard Scoil na nDéise was Dr. Alice Coffey, Ph. D. Alice who is Director of Post Graduate Programmes and College Lecturer at the Catherine Mc Auley School of Nursing and Midwifery at University College Cork attended St. Joseph’s Presentation Secondary School in Dungarvan. She was interested in both the nursing and teaching professions, but decided initially to become a nurse and completed her training in Dr Stevens hospital in Dublin.
Aoife Landers presents a bouquet of flowers to Deirdre Fahey, Special Guest on the night and Sophie Cullen presenting a bouquet to Dr. Alice Coffey, PhD, Guest Speaker on the night at the Ard Scoil na nDeise Annual Awards
Alice worked for a number of years in the field of general nursing, midwifery and as a nurse tutor. “Over the years I have had the great privilege of caring for people both at the beginning and at the end of life”, she said. She was still drawn to the teaching profession and completed a degree in Health Service Management. This was followed with a Masters degree in Education and in 2010 with her PhD. Alice paid tribute to her husband Billy and her four wonderful children who were a fantastic support to her throughout her years of study. The day she was conferred with her Doctorate was indeed a proud day for all the family. Alice now manages programmes for nurses who return to university to pursue further education in their specialist areas, supervises students doing research and continues to conduct research herself.
“You young ladies may know exactly what you want to do and you may realize your dreams very early in life. On the other hand life could throw up some surprises and you could find yourself doing something very different to what you had planned at the outset and that is ok. I hope that some of you will choose to become nurses and that all of you will be lifelong learners”, said Alice.
We are very grateful to Alice for taking the time to prepare her most interesting and encouraging talk for our Awards Night and for sharing her wisdom and experiences with our students. On behalf of the school community Sophie Allen, Chairperson of the Students’ Council presented Alice with a bouquet of flowers.
Alice’s youngest daughter Dearbhla who is a very talented artist, musician and singer completed her Leaving Certificate at Ard Scoil na nDéise last year and is now studying Art at Crawford College of Art and Design in Cork.
The annual Awards Night at Ard Scoil na nDéise is a very special evening for our school community, a wonderful occasion for celebration. I am deeply grateful to our Awards Committee Mary Ashe, Tommy Collins, Siobhán de Paor, Ciara Lucey, Louise Neylin , Eibhlín Power and Deputy Principal Colette Power, to our Parents’ Council, our sponsors and many other people who work extremely hard to make the night so special for our award winners and their families.
