Awards Night, Fund Raising, Panto Time, Competitions 21st November 2011 Awards Night On Friday evening we were delighted to host our annual awards night to recognise and reward the many and varied talents of our students, past and present. Our MC for the night, Mr Tommy Collins, welcomed the students, their families, our guest speaker and sponsors and Ms Anne Stack introduced the first award of the night, that of “Spirit of Transition Year”.
This was awarded to Tabitha Alexander, who epitomised the spirit of T.Y as she was fully involved in all aspects of the year. Her wonderful art work won her an award in the Enterprise Final and in the Songbook Competition. Also she completed the ECDL and First Aid courses and partook in Outdoor pursuits, Horse-riding and Public Speaking. Added to all this Tabitha has a perfect attendance record since first year of school. A courteous and patient girl, Tabitha has the respect of students and teachers alike. The next award, for “Full Attendance for Two Years”, went to Tabitha Alexander, Catherine Henley, Siobhan Nugent, Stella Queally, Kayleigh Veale and Colleen Whelan.
The “Margaret Radley Geography Award” was presented to Orla Queally for her outstanding result in L.C. Geography in 2011. Orla is now attending nursing college in UCC.
Sixth year students Abigail de Souza and Jasmine McCarthy did an excellent job reading the citations for the “Class Awards”. These are chosen by their class mates for being “a good listener”, “kind and considerate”, “always willing to help”, “talented and hardworking”, “bubbly, funny, caring and generous”. These are but a few of the comments the girls wrote to express their admiration for their classmates Aisling Curran 1.1, Caitriona O’Brien 1.2, Maire Fennell 1.3, Catherine Bowen2.1, Elizabeth McCarthy 2.2, Roisín Leonard 2.2, Clodagh Keane 3.1, Megan Higgins 3.2, Emma Nugent TY, Niamh Wade TY, Aoife Brockie 5th yr, Jasmine McCarthy 5th yr, Sarah Kiely 5ht yr, Sarah Glascott 6th yr, Louise Hyslop 6th yr, Chloe Veale 6th yr.
Mrs CIara Lucey introduced the “Music Awards” for Maeve Brockie, Amy Faherty, Aoife Landers, Clara Mannion, Jennifer Moore and Muireann O’Brien.
Cliona Ryan 2.1, Grace Heffernan 2.2 and Grace Whelan 2.3 accepted the award on behalf of their classmates for their participation last year in “Ebenezer”. The overall music award went to Frances Fitzgerald. During her time in the Ard Scoil, Frances was a most obliging and pleasant student. She is a very modest and unassuming young lady and deserves recognition for her excellent musical skills. She is a brilliant harpist and pianist and has entertained us on many occasions. Mrs Joan Clancy presented “Elocution Award” to Aisling Curran, Ellen Curran, Dervla Duhig, Grace Heffernan and Doireann O’Brien. Public Speaking and Debating Awards went to Andrea Foley, Eilis O’Keeffe, Megan Daly and Sarah Fitzgerald.
Eilís and Megan were back on stage immediately as they received an award for their excellent work on the Student’s Council.
Merit Awards Ciara Scanlan, Roisin McComb, Jasmine McCarthy, Sarah Connors, Andrea Foley, Siobhan Nugent, Aisling Veale and Aisling Cronin spent the first day of their Easter Holiday, from 8am to 3pm, baking and selling cakes as part of their many endeavours to fundraise for the girls who travelled to Lourdes. Samantha Hayes was recognised for her contribution to school life, enthusiasm for participating in life’s opportunities and consistent good manners and upbeat outlook towards students and staff. Abigail de Souza was recognised for her great interest in and natural flair for cooking. Following her ‘A’ grade result in the Home Economics JC exam she represented Ard Scoil with Laura Sheehan in Food Festival R.S.C. competition judged. She is always willing to help others and most unwilling to accept praise.
Lauren Mulvihill is your real “all rounder”. A talented artist and musician, she is involved in every aspect of school life as well as excelling in her academic work. However it is for her outstanding creative writing skills that I nominate Lauren. In first year she won the class short story prize and this year, 13 year old Lauren beat nearly 5,000 students from all over Ireland to win the inaugural Brainfood Fantasy writing competition, sponsored by John West. Since then she has contributed to the class magazine and other competitions.
Sports Awards These awards were introduced by the PE teachers, Mary Ashe and Emily Pickering. Mrs Ashe welcomed our special guest Deirdre Fahey, who presented these awards. Deirdre is a past pupil of the Ard Scoil and while in school she played on Camogie, Football and Hockey teams, winning a Munster Football title and a runners up medal in Camogie. She went on to play with Waterford at Minor and Junior level and was a starring member of the Waterford team that was this year’s all Ireland Junior Final.

Academic Awards The following girls were recognised for their outstanding results in the 2011 Junior Cert Exams – Chloe Keane, Natalia Pabianiak, Eleanor Walsh, Sarah Craddock, Aoife Murphy, Ciara Gildea, Dearbhla Whelan and Kathy (Shean Yang) Lai.
The following girls achieved remarkable results in this year’s Leaving Cert exams – Eilís O’Keeffe, now studying Law and French in UCC; Grainne Dwyer, B.Ed Primary Teaching, St Pats College; Grace O’Sullivan, Law International and German in UCC; Megan Daly, Arts UCC; Frances Fitzgerald, Primary Teaching Mary Immaculate College; Orla Fitzgerald, Early Childhood Studies at U.L.; Louise Hyslop, Applied Languages UL; Kate Mulvihill, Nursing UCC; Edel Roche, Sports Science UL; Niamh Walsh, Business Studies UL.
Following the presentation of the awards we all moved to the Senior Hall, where, once again, our wonderful Parent’s Council had a delicious repast awaiting us. Thank You! I would like to thank our sponsors who are so loyal to the Ard Scoil. Despite our difficult econonomic climate, they are still willing to support us. Their contributions, prizes etc. help considerably in running our Awards night. Parents’ Council. While the students and staff were busy preparing for the awards night, our Parents’ Council were bag-packing in Garvey’s SuperValu to raise much needed funds for our school. Many thanks to the parents and students who were involved in this project. The Council are now appealing to other parents for help on December 2nd and 3rd when they will once again be bag-packing, this time in Dunnes Stores. If you are free, please contact the school office. Our hardworking Parents’ Council provided and served the refreshments at the Awards Night and for this we are very grateful. Sing a Song of Sixpence. Our panto rehearsals, under the guidance of Mr. And Mrs Collins and Ms. Loise Neylin are well under way. The Panto will take place in the Junior Hall on the 2nd, 3rd and 4th of December. Tickets are available at the school office. Concern Worldwide Writing Competition. Earlier this year the school was informed that 6th year student Ciara Scanlan had won second prize in this prestigious competition. On Wednesday she will travel to Newman House in St Stephen’s Green , Dublin to receive her prize. Well done Ciara. Soroptimist International, Dungarvan Art Competition. The local branch of Soroptomist International held their art competition in Lawlors hotel last weekend. Congratulations to Tabitha Alexander, 5th year who won first prize, Chaneklle O'Reagan for her 2nd prize and Andrea Foley, 6th year, who won third prize. Well done to the girls and their teacher Mrs. Mary Foley. |
