Successful Art Exhibition, Senior Camogie Win, TY Quiz, Pink Day 31st October 2011

Last Wednesday night saw the opening of an exhibition of art works by past and present pupils of the Ard Scoil. Principal Dorothy Hughes welcomed all the guests who included artists, students, staff, members of the Board of Management, the Mercy sisters and the parents council. She handed over to Mrs. Joan Clancy who, as well as being a member of the Ard Scoil staff, is well renowned in art circles and owns a successful gallery in Ring. Mrs. Clancy spoke of the wonderful inspiration of Art teacher Mrs. Mary Foley who has guided so many young artists to success in their exams and to the many past pupils now pursuing a career in the Art world. We are privileged to have paintings by these artists on display. Among the artists featured is Linda Schliebitz whose solo exhibitions have been acclaimed. Ann Dunphy who followed up an honours degree from the Crawford School of art with an M.A, in Fine Art from the W.W.I.C. in Wales. She has exhibited widely and her work is to be found in public and private collections. Natalie Conaty graduated with an honours degree in Fashion design and worked in the fashion industry before working with the wardrobe department of the B.B.C. She was an illustrator and costume maker on the very popular series, The Tudors, and was head of costume on many Irish film, theatre and video productions. She now leads a team of 100 as Figure Stylist at Madame Toussaud’s in London. Joan Clancy’s daughters Blawneen and Rayleen are also acclaimed artists whose exhibitions have enjoyed considerable achievement. Also based locally is Sandra Norris who graduated with an honours degree from the Crawford School of Art. A recent graduate of W.I.T is Cassie Kirby whose pictures are attracting much admiration. We also saw some work by Colleen Ferncombe who is presently studying at the Limerick School of art and design; Colleen’s sister, Susanne is currently making a name for herself in the high powered world of fashion design. Mr.s Mary Foley then spoke to the gathering, speaking of her beginnings in the Ard Scoil under the leadership and tutelage of former Art teacher Ms. Gay Morrissey, who began the tradition of exhibiting students work. She thanked Mrs. Hughes, Mrs. Clancy, the staff and the Board for their support in organising this exhibition and gave especial thanks to Caretaker Mr. John Morgan who worked tirelessly, hanging 128 paintings of varying shapes and sizes in time for the show. The exhibition was officially opened by past pupil, Sinead Hehir. Sinead is an honours graduate of the Crawford college of Art where she won the C.I.T. and O.P.W. Purchase Prize awards. She has been a finalist in many prestigious competitions and has had triumphant solo shows. Sinead spoke of her time in the Ard Scoil and commended the encouragement given to all young artists. Thank you to our wonderful Parents’ Council who once again provided refreshments for the guests. On Thursday and Friday, the school was delighted to host the visit of many school groups as well as members of the general public who came to enjoy the exhibition. After the mid-term break, the library will return to its usual use but paintings and craft work will still be on display in the corridors, stairwells, foyers and Art room for us all to enjoy. More photos of the Art Show and Opening Night Senior Camogie Match, October 26th Our senior camogie team opened their championship campaign this year with a win against Ballincollig Community School on Wednesday last in the Dungarvan G.A.A Club pitch. Ard Scoil led from the start with third year student Stella Queally opening the scoring with a point followed soon after by a goal from Orla Hickey. The girls kept up their attack on the Ballincollig defence with a half time score of 3-7 top 0-0. Ballincollig settled into the match in the second half, picking up 2 goals and 1 point. The score didn’t reflect the intensity of the match. Ard Scoil fought for every ball and score. A superb team effort was displayed by all. The full time score was 6-10 to 2-1, a well deserved win. Best of luck in the semi final against Millstreet to the team and their mentor Ms. Pickering. T.Y. Quiz. With the C.B.S. On Tuesday last , the T.Y. students enjoyed an afternoon in the company of their counterparts in the C.B.S. when they had a table quiz. Mrs. Stack returned to help out in the correcting of the answers. Winners on the day were; First - Layla Quarry, Eimear O’Donnell-Maldonado, Adam Houlihan. Second - Ciara Kelly, Ellen Power, Jack Morrissey,Jack O’Donnell. Third - Caitriona Slevin, Angela McIntosh, Emma Casey and Connor Morrissey.
Pink Day For the last few years, we have had Pink Day in the Ard Scoil in order to fundraise for research into breast cancer. This year again, T.Y students Evie McGrath, Layla Quarry, Tara Healy, Cheyenne Tobin, Emma de Paor, Ellie Walsh Jessica O’Brien, Niamh Kiely, Chloe Keane Emma Casey, Aoife Murphy and Aoife Landers worked hard to ensure another successful day. They organised quizzes and discos for the first and second years; everyone dressed in pink and we all moved to the park to place pink ribbons on the bandstand. Pink roses were planted in the school garden and fantastic prizes were raffled.
First year quiz winners were Shannon Kelly, Ava Kelly, Dervla Kearns and Hannah Power. Second year quiz winners were; Emily Quinn, Maeve Power, Anna Whelan, Eileen Landers and Nicole Wojczyk. Well done to Mrs. O’Brien and her students who hope to have raised €1,000 once again which will be donated to the Breast cancer unit in the Bons Secours hospital in Cork. Thank you to all the businesses in Dungarvan who contributed prizes for the raffle.
