"Reaching our Potential with Respect, Care and Friendship"

Lots of Exciting T.Y. Projects and Second Years Knit for Age Action Ireland

10th October 2011

T.Y. News

Cake sales

Both T.Y. classes have baked and run cake sales in aid of the West Waterford Hospice movement. The sales were very well supported as the cakes were absolutely delicious and the girls raised a good sum for this very worthy cause.

Parents’ Information Night

Last Monday, an information night was held for the parents of our T.Y. students. Principal Mrs. Dorothy Hughes addressed the group and Mr. Tommy Collins spoke about work experience which will see the girls head out into work placements in November. T.Y. coordinator, Ms. Carmel Fox gave an account of the year’s programme which the girls will undertake, with so many elements to be covered that the year will flash by. It was wonderful to see such a big turn out on the night and we always appreciate the support of the students’ parents.

Manual Handling

Next Wednesday the T.Y.s will have a day’s instruction in “Manual Handling”. This course, run by Mr. Liam Moore, will teach the girls about safety in the workplace in preparation for the entry into  the world of work during work experience weeks.

French/German “Breakfasts”

One class the language students always look forward to is the “breakfast” when they prepare and enjoy a breakfast, continental style! Following the French students who had theirs the week before, this week nit was the turn of the German students (pictures included of both groups)

French pen pals

Thanks to T.Y. student, Alice Genouel who has put us in contact with pupils of her school in the Alps, first year and T.Y. girls have written their first missives to pen pals in France. We hope that other class groups will soon follow on.

Second Years Knit for Age Action Ireland (alias the innocent smoothie big knit)

The Ard Scoil 2nd years are knitting hats for the Innocent Smoothie campaign to raise money for Age Action Ireland.

Age Action Ireland is a charity which promotes positive ageing and better policies and services for older people. Working with, and on behalf of, older people they aim to make Ireland the best place in the world in which to grow old.

For every “behatted” bottle sold, Innocent Smoothies will donate 20c to Age Action Ireland. Our maths teacher, Mrs Coughlan, has helped to knit the Innocent Smoothie hats and we are very grateful for her assistance.

By Stephanie Curran and Dearbhla Flynn.

(Well done to Stephanie and Dearbhla who have also done an excellent power point presentation on this work.)
