"Reaching our Potential with Respect, Care and Friendship"

Sports Medals, Past Pupil Writing for Sunday Times, School Mass

19th September 2011

Sports News

Congratulations to 1st year student, Kate McGrath, who came second in the Munster Schools Multi event competition last week. She also achieved a personal best in the long jump. I’m sure we’ll see Kate have many more successes in the future.

Congratulations also to past pupil, Deirdre Fahey who was a member of the Waterford Junior Camogie team which was victorious in the recent All Ireland Final. She played very well in midfield and launched many of the Waterford attacks, despite taking a heavy knock in the first half.

After school training has begun for both camogie and football and it’s good to see so many turn up from all years. The Junior camogie players will take part in a blitz on Wednesday, September 28th.

Well done to T.Y. student, Aoife Landers, who had a historic win in the recent All Ireland Handball championships. She won the Under 17 girls competition and is the first Waterford girl to bring an All Ireland title to the county.

The Sunday Times

Lorraine Wemyss, a past pupil of the Ard Scoil is now writing for the Sunday Times. We are not surprised as Lorraine was always an excellent student of English. Indeed, she won a national essay writing competition while at school and her research as a member of the debate team was first class. Well done Lorraine, we’re very proud of you.

School Mass

On Friday we all went to the Friary church for our annual Mass to launch the new school year and celebrate the excellent Junior and Leaving Cert results.

Following the entrance hymn, Shauna Ferncombe welcomed the congregation, especially the new students and staff members. The first reading was by Taylor Murray and Maggie Hally, Grace Heffernan, Hannah Warren, Jill Montgomery and Dervla Duhig sang the psalm On Eagles’ Wings; then Aisling Hayes took the second reading.

The prayers of the Faithful were delivered by Sinead O’Donnell, Shanice McGovern, Louise Conway, Erin Morrissey, Maggie Halley, Nicole Ferncombe and Ellen Power. The Offertory gifts were brought by Shauna Young, Chloe Jordan, Laura Duggan and Ciara O’Brien while the commentary was given by Sarah Craddock. The new Cairde girls were commissioned and then Ciara Gildea and Derbhla Whelan read the Reflection.

Principal Mrs. Hughes thanked the religion teachers, Ms Cotter, Ms O’Shea, Mrs. Lonergan and Mrs. Lucey for their work on preparing the Mass. Mrs Lucey is also of course our music teacher and she and her wonderful musicians, singers and choirs deservedly merited praise too. Mrs Hughes welcomed the new members of the school community and thanked Fr.Flor who celebrated the Mass.

As usual, Fr Flor’s homily was right on target and perfectly pitched for the students.  Hard luck, Fr Flor, the Dublin prayers of Mrs Hughes and Mrs O’ Donovan seemed to have edged out the Kerry ones!
