Back to School, Patricia Redlich RIP, Writing Competition, Ballet 5th September 2011 Back to School 2011-012 By the time you are reading this we will have been back at school for two weeks, seems strange as it’s still only the first week of September. On Thursday, August 25th, the Leaving Cert class of 2011 celebrated their excellent results at their Ball in the Park Hotel. The girls looked stunning and a wonderful night was had by all. We wish them all the best as they pursue various career options. Now the Junior cert students anxiously await their results. We welcome the new first years who had the Cairde girls on hand to help them settle in on their first days; they shepherded them to familiarise them with the school buildings and have run various events to give them the opportunity to get to know each other. We also welcome our new teachers Robert Barry ( Physics and Maths), Julianne Foley (Business), Daniel Veale (Science),and our international students, coming this year from the U.S., France and Spain. We look forward to another busy and successful year in the Ard Scoil. Patricia Redlich, R.I.P. It was with sadness that we heard of the recent death of Patricia Redlich. Patricia was a good friend of the Ard Scoil, attending career nights, giving talks for parents and was a very informative and interesting guest speaker at an Awards night. We would like to extend our sympathy to her husband and son, ar dheis De go raibh a anam. Concern Creative Writing Competition Congratulations to 6th year student, Ciara Scanlan, who took second place in this year’s Concern Creative Writing Comprtition. The competition received 776 entries from 39 countries spanning 5 continents. It took top journalists from Ireland and the U.S. to decide the winners and it was truly hard to whittle down to the finalists. Congratulations to Ciara whose article is posted on www.concern.net/writingcompetition. Winning and selected articles will be included in the Concern Creative Writing Competition book, to be published by Liffey Press and launched later in the year. Ciara receives an E-reader as a prize. Well done Ciara.
Gold for Elocution in Árd Scoil Gold Medals for Outstanding Achievement in Elocution were awarded to Doireann O’Brien and Ellen Curran at the recent examinations held in Árd Scoil na nDéise, Dungarvan. The presentations were made at an assembly in the Junior Hall followed by a mini concert performed by a host of talented First Year students in celebration of their excellent results. “Indeed it was a hard choice for the examiner to make” said Joan Clancy. “There were two gold medals to be awarded, and the runners up for this prestigious award were Aisling Curran, Grace Heffernan and Dervla Duhig.”
Examiner Evelyn Mulrennan paid tribute to the high standards, hard work and dedication displayed by all the First Year candidates, and there is no doubt that she was extremely impressed by their good clear speech and nice manners because they all got great marks. Árd Scoil na nDéise, Dungarvan is the only school in County Waterford offering Elocution as a mandatory part of the curriculum for First Yr students, and every student is prepared for individual exams. “In Árd Scoil na nDéise we develop all aspects of the individual student in a caring environment.” says Principal Dorothy Hughes. “The elocution class builds self confidence through improvised drama and short pieces of prose and poetry, not necessarily academic”, explains teacher Joan Clancy, “ranging from Steinbeck to Roald Dahl, Shakespeare to Heather Stephens, Alan Murphy to Colm Toibin, Conlon McKenna to Doug Macleod, and a host of others in between.” “The First Yr students have great fun in the elocution class” adds Deputy Principal Colette Power, “with the emphasis on good speech, proper courtesy and etiquette. An important life skill!” Ballet class 6th Year student Charlotte Govier has danced for us in many school shows and now instills her love of ballet in young pupils. On the 27th of August there was an open day for the “ Ballet and Dance Fitness” class and Charlotte wants to say well done to her young protégées who danced so well on the day.
