Songbooks, Tannery Visit, Law Day & Second Year Concert 4th April 2011 T.Y. News. This week the T.Y. students are out in the world for another week of work experience. Before this they had a very busy week. Their songbooks were judged by English teacher Mrs. Eibhlin Power and Art t teacher Mrs. Mary Foley. It was a very difficult task as the girls had produced such excellent work. The two first prize winners were Tabitha Alexander and Dayna Lawlor. Second prizes went to Maeve Brockie and Laura Sheehan with third prizes going to Sarah Crotty, Frances Whelan and Aoife Kiely. Well done girls.
Visit to the Tannery. On Wednesday, March 13th, we T.Y. students went down to the Tannery Cookery School to watch a demonstration by Chef Paul Flynn. We visited the garden and then went to the kitchen. Paul showed us how to cook baked beans, make delicious honeycomb sweets and also chocolate and peanut butter fudge. It was a really enjoyable experience and we would like to thank Paul Flynn for inviting us. Hannah O’Connell. Law Day. On Tuesday, March 29th, the T.Y. students participated in a “Law Day”. Two barristers from Cork, Karen and Niamh, visited us to talk about a career in Law. Each barrister took a class, Niamh with T.Y.A. and Karen with T.Y.B. The day was split into three sections. The first stage took place in the morning before break; this was a basic introduction to law. The girls learned the ins and outs of the law such as the court system, various facets of the law and also the study system. This was a great opportunity to ask questions and get an honest opinion on this career. During the The second stage, held between break and lunch, the T.Y. students saw how a real trial works, well via “Time to Kill” starring MatthewMcConaughy and Samuel L. Jackson. To end the day, using the information and technique we had learned, we enacted a mock trial. Both classes thoroughly enjoyed the case of Bob “Jaws” Murphy and declared the day to be a great success. Abigail de Souza. Second Year Concert. Last Friday, the second years got a welcome break from classes when we held a concert in the Junior Hall. This gave all the talented pupils a chance to shine and the acts ranged from dances and songs to music and poetry recitals. Everyone enjoyed the concert and hopes there will be more to come!
Mapi, our student from Spain sang a fab Spanish song and we had our expert musician playing the piano and the concertina. The dances were really entertaining and the singers didn’t sing a note out of tune! Big thanks to the T.Y.s and Year Head Bean de Paor who helped to organise everything.
