National Writing Competition Win, Music Displays, Careers Evening 27th March 2011 Lauren Mulvihill Wins National Writing Competition Second year student Lauren Mulvihill has won the inaugural Brainfood.ie Fantasy Writing competition. No newcomer to winning writing competitions, Lauren won first prize last year in Ard Scoil’s first year short story competition.
The Fantasy Writing Competition was organised by John West Foods as part of their Brainfood campaign and website. Acclaimed author, Frank P. Ryan, who works with the company in his guise as evolutionary biologist, collaborated with them in organising this event. Lauren submitted her entry, Ways of Making Maths More Interesting, and her teacher, Mrs. Eibhlin Power was delighted to be informed about a month ago that Lauren’s work had been shortlisted from 4,800 entries to the final 15! On Tuesday last, Lauren, with her parents Brian and Christine Mulvihill and teacher Mrs. Power, attended a reception in the Chester Beatty Library in Dublin Castle at which the winners were to be announced. Following a delicious “brainfood” buffet, the students and their guests moved to the function room to find posters detailing their names, stories and judges’ comments on the wall. Frank P.Ryan addressed the audience, linking his work as a biologist with the theme of magic and fantasy in an intriguing power point presentation.
The young writers were judged in three categories, Primary, Junior Secondary and Senior Secondary with five students shortlisted in each category. Firstly all were called to the podium to receive their certificate scrolls. Then each category winner was announced, starting with the Primary section. Luckily the announcement followed quickly that Lauren had won her section! But of course not only that but Lauren was also chosen as overall winner! As category winner, Lauren received an iPod touch and as overall winner she won an ipad plus a trip to London where she will be mentored by writer Frank P Ryan and his publisher! Each finalist also received a John West hamper and was allowed to take home their poster. Everyone was given a copy of Frank P Ryan’s fantasy novel, “The Snowmelt River”, the first of a trilogy. As Frank spent his early childhood in Clonmel, the story is set there with the teenage protagonists taking trips to Dungarvan and Clonea! It’s a great read, not just for teenagers! It is a wonderful commendation of Lauren’s writing skills that Frank should say how much he liked and was impressed by her story. We are delighted for Lauren and look forward to more of her witty and imaginative writing. Songbooks on Display We always like to display the work of our talented students and this week saw the exceptional projects of our First Year Music students on show in the foyer of the junior building. Meanwhile in the senior foyer the superb art work and interpretive skills of T.Y. English pupils is to be seen. And as 3rd and 6th years began to receive their “Pre” results, the second years were able to take time out with Year Head , Bean de Paor, to enjoy a concert featuring their many musical, dance and theatrical talents!
Careers Evening The Ard Scoil was buzzing on Tuesday evening for our Careers evening. Over forty different careers were represented, twenty of them by past pupils. Parents of students also shared their experience as did many from the local community. Seven different colleges of further education had stands in the Senior Hall, displaying brochures and information on their institutions. The feedback from both parents and students was very positive and enthusiastic. It has certainly given our girls plenty of “food for thought “as they ponder future careers. The evening was the brainchild of the Parents’ Council who worked with guidance teachers John Cunningham and Kimberly Gleeson to organise such a successful event. Light refreshments were provided on the night by the Parents’ Council. I commend all involved and thank them most sincerely. Colette Power. (Vice Principal) |
