TY News

Cookery demonstration

On Tuesday 1st of March the TY students watched a cookery demonstration by Eunice Power, who cooked four fish dishes. The first dish was oven roasted salmon with vegetables, then a fish stew followed by a thai fish curry. Lastly she cooked prawns. The students fully enjoyed the experience, some even changing their minds and discovering a taste for fish. We would like to thank Eunice for taking the time out to come in and share her skills with us.

English Songbook Competition

As part of their English course, TY students were asked to choose a song and create a “song book” with the appropriate images to illustrate the lyrics. This is part of the poetry section of the course – helping students to recognise imagery in their poems/songs.

This year it was extremely difficult to choose winners for each class as the standard of work was really exceptional.

The winners are:

TY A

  1. Dayna Lawlor – New York (Empire State of Mind)
  2. Maeve Brockie – Sk8r Boi
  3. Aoife Kiely – Love the way you lie

TY B

  1. Tabitha Alexander – Thriller
  2. Laura Sheehan – Songbirds
  3. Sarah Crotty – You’ve Got a Friend in Me, and Frances Whelan – Vive La Vide

The girls will be on display in the foyer as not only did they show great interpretative skills, but the pieces are all beautiful works of art.

Gaisce

The TY students travelled to Knockree Youth Hostel in Wicklow for the Adventure Challenge section of their Gaisce Award. On the first evening the group completed a glorious starlit10km walk. As it was pitch black the girls had to use their wits, and of course their torches, to master the hike.

After a sound sleep there was an 8am call for the group to awake and get ready. Following a hearty breakfast the girls were divided into two groups and taken to complete team games followed by Archery and Balance – the latter conducted on low standing ropes.

This was not the end of the day’s activities as there was the little matter of the second hike to get through. More difficult then the first walk, the group had to conquer a mountain trail by reaching the summit. Their efforts were greatly rewarded by the magnificent views from the top, which, thanks to the clear, sunny conditions, were far reaching.

Much fun was had on the trip and the girls and staff would like to thank the hostel staff and the activity leaders James and Bill for all their help.
