7th March 2011 Newsletter

Busy Art Department

Art teacher Mrs. Mary Foley and her students have been very busy over the past months with various projects as well as regular course work. The Art room is always a hive of activity and the work of the students brightens up the corridors about the school.

Lismore Castle Exhibition of Ard Scoil Student Work

The 5th and Transition year students are busy putting the finishing touches to their creations for the forthcoming exhibition in Lismore Castle. The theme of the exhibition is Still Life Studies. Students have been innovative in their interpretation of the theme and their use of materials; for example one creation is constructed from 14,000 cotton buds, another from insulating foam and plaster and a third is made with mirrors and aluminium. Students have been planning and making their pieces since last November and the art work varies in size from one foot to ten feet long.

We are delighted to be exhibiting in such a prestigious venue, one that usually hosts artists of international acclaim and Turner Prize winners. The exhibition runs from March 17th to 27th and from 11.00a.m.to 4.45.p.m. at Lismore Castle Arts.

Bacon Babe!!!

The Transition Year Art students have been involved in creating a pig for the launch of this year’s West Waterford Festival of Food. As schoolgoers, we came up with the idea of an educational animal!! Once we had made the pig (using chicken wire and papier mache ) we painted the pig in sections according to the different cuts of meat. We then included some recipes courtesy of Bord Bia corresponding to the various cuts; for example, to illustrate the loin section, there is a delicious recipe for pork chops.

We brought our pig to Walton Park where all the pigs were on display for public viewing. There was a wonderful festive atmosphere at the launch; we enjoyed seeing  all the pigs and sampling some of the local produce. We look forward to trying out even more tasty food during the festival itself.

T.Y News

This was another very busy week for our T.Y students as on Wednesday they enjoyed a superb cookery demonstration from local chef Eunice Power befor e setting out for their outdoor pursuits adventure. We will have a full report on all their activities next week.

Pre Exams and L.C.V.P work experience.

While third and sixth years were taking their pre exams this week, our 5th year L.C.V.P. students were out in the world on work experience. We would like to thank all the employers in Dungarvan for giving the girls this opportunity. They return to class on Monday while the exam students have to soldier on for another few days.

Parents’ Council Table Quiz.

A Table Quiz was held in Minnies on Friday, February 18th, organised by our hard working Parents’ Council. It raised a thousand euro under the able chairmanship of Teresa Daly.

Many, many thanks to Bob O’Brien and his team for allowing the Ard Scoil to benefit from the wonderful work they do to raise funds for various organisations.

I would like to thank all the parents and friends who supported the quiz on the night. We had a huge range of prizes very kindly donated by parents and supporters of the Ard Scoil. I can assure you, your generosity is very much appreciated.
