Fantasy Author, Cross Country Qualifiers, Munster Camogie Semi-Finals, Economist Visits 31 January 2011 Newsletter Congratulations to 2nd Year Fantasy Author A big well done is in order for second year student Lauren Mulvihill. An excellent All-rounder, Lauren displayed her aptitude for creative writing with the story she penned for the “Brain Food Fantasy writing competition”, sponsored by John West. Lauren’s work has been shortlisted to be one of fifteen chosen from 5000, and she will be attending an awards ceremony in Dublin in March. Cross Country Athletes Qualify for Munster Finals On Friday Mrs Ashe and her athletes travelled to St. Augstine’s to take part in the East Munster Schools Cross Country Championships. The intermediate Team – Kayleigh Norris, Aine Power, Emer Duff and Tabitha Alexander - came third and qualified for the Munster Championships. The Junior Squad – Catriona O’Brien, Catherine Henley and Louise Conway – came 4th, also qualifying for the finals. The Minor Girls – Cliona Ryan, Ordnaith Keane, Grace Heffernan, Laura Cusack, Aoife Foran and Dearbhla McMullen – came 5th. Cliona finished in 6th place in this race, earning her a place in the finals. Well done to all the girls and their mentor Mrs Ashe. Munster Camogie Final
On Saturday the 29th of January the Senior Camogie Team took on the might of St. Declan’s Kilmacthomas, in an exciting final, played in Bushy Park. Our young players were in no way intimidated by a team with no less than seven county players, and battled till the very end. Congratulations to St Declan’s on their win and we look forward to more exhilarating outings for this Ard Scoil Team. Senior Team Munster Semi-Final
On Wednesday 19th of January our Senior Camogie team competed in a Munster Semi Final in Cork against Ballincollig Community School. It was a very tough match and both sides showed excellent camogie skills. Every girl gave it her all and at half time the teams were level. Beautiful scores on our side came courtesy of Lauren McGregor, Stella Quelly and Aoife Landers. The final result was 3-3 to 2-3 in our favour. Our win has given us a place in the Munster Final, an event for which the team must now prepare. A committed bunch, we are sure of practising and playing to the very best of our capabilities.

Best of luck on the big day. By Hannah O’Connell Junior Camogie On Wednesday 12th of January our Junior Camogie team played a Munster Semi-Final match against Abbey Community College. The girls played a very tough match in terrible conditions. All the girls played to their best ability, despite the absence of several players, but were unlucky not to come out victors. The final score was 3-6 to 7-3. The team that travelled were: Kayleigh Veale, Eimear O’Donnell, Jessica O’Brien, Roisin Flynn, Maggie Hally, Becky Hurley, Ellen Curran, Aoife Landers, Aileen Gallagher, Jessica Troy, Lauren McGregor, Grace Heffernan, Stella Queally, Ciara Hurley, Angela McIntosh Subs: Louise Conway, Dearbhla Flynn. Visit of Economist Jim Power On Friday the senior economics students were privileged to have a visit from economist Jim Power, who spoke to them on Economic and Finance issues. He spoke of the economic cycle, reminding them that in 1988 “The Economist” referred to Ireland as the “Poorest of the Rich” nations, while the Irish Times in 2005 announced Ireland as “the second wealthiest country in the world”. Mr Power spoke of the Celtic Tiger, its rise and demise and of the key challenges we face in Ireland and encouraged the girls to take on these challenges and see our country rise again. Thank you to Mr Power and to Economics teacher Mrs Dowdall for organising this event.
