"Reaching our Potential with Respect, Care and Friendship"

Carol Service & Hamlet

Newsletter 13th December 2010

Carol Service

On Friday afternoon last, the school community moved to the Friary Church for our Annual Carol Service, hosted by the inimitable Fr Flor Crowley. The first year recorder group lead the congregation in a rendition of Oh Come All Ye Faithful, then Roisin Preston read words of welcome.

Fr Flor blessed the Advent Wreath and spoke of its symbolism. The first reading by Catriona Slevin was followed by the beautiful carol Gaudete sung by the choir.

After the second reading by Kate Hynes and Chloe Keating, Spanish student Maria, singing beautifully in her native tongue, lead us all in Silent Night.

The second year music class performed Little Drummer Boy, while gifts were brought to the altar: Zoe, Erica, Stephanie and Ciara brought the Crib and a box of food to symbolise our sharing with those less fortunate than ourselves. The prays of intercession were led by Abigail de Souza. Then Layla Quarry and the Choir sang O Holy Night.

The Reflection was given by Samantha Hayes and Aisling Hayes, and Fr Flor spoke the concluding prayer.

Principal Mrs Hughes thanked religion teachers Ms O’Shea, Ms Cotter and Mrs Lucey and Fr Flor for once again organising such a beautiful service. Of course we must also thank Mrs Lucey who doubled as music teacher, leading her singers and musicians Frances Fitzgerald, Amy Faherty, Muireann O’Brien and others in a moving and delightful celebration of the true spirit of Christmas.

Hamlet

On Thursday night 5th and 6th year English Students, with their teachers, went to the cinema to watch a live performance of Hamlet, broadcast from the National Theatre in London. To say the performance was superb is an understatement.

The show was greeted with much applause and commendation from its audience. All who saw it enjoyed this riveting, modern and accessible version of the Bard’s great play.

A review of the play by one of students will be in next week’s news.
