"Reaching our Potential with Respect, Care and Friendship"

Volunteering in the Community, Credit Union Art Winners, Weee Recycling

6th December 2010

Volunteering in the Community

First, second and transition years took part in an art exhibition based on the theme of Volunteering in the Community, in conjunction with Co. Waterford Community Forum. After brainstorming and researching what volunteering meant to each student, first and second years decided to create individual images. Many of the images highlighted a personal approach to volunteering, believing it begins at home, for example helping with the cleaning, babysitting etc.

Transition Years decided to work as a team on a single image. Each student chose a section of an image of a girl’s face, each putting their own individual stamp on the piece, through their choice of painting technique and colours. The sections were glued together to create a picture measuring 8ft by 8ft.

All images were on display in Clonea hotel for the awards ceremony of the Community Forum and will be on display in the Shopping Centre in Dungarvan during December.

It was a very positive project to be involved in.

Volunteering in the Community, something we neglect sometimes, was the theme for our images. It was really cool to see the different ideas we all came up with. Everyone had their own idea on what volunteering is all about. Some of us drew people picking up litter, firemen, people holding hands and even the Powerpuff Girls! It was really fun and got us thinking about what we could do to help out around town (although saving a city from monsters and evil monkeys, like in the Powerpuff Girls, may be a little out of our reach.)

I got my idea from a picture I found online of a young boy trying to sweep a footpath with a brush that was much too big for him. It was a little shocking that a kid that age was already helping out that much. It’s really important for us all to do our part. I hope these images will encourage people to help out too.

There are so many small things we can all do, sometimes we don’t even realise it!

Dungarvan Credit Union Art Competition

Well done to Aisling Foley 1st year, Paulina Masterlez 6th year and Gina Gleeson 6th year, who were winners in this year’s Credit Union Competition. We wish the best of luck to Gina, whose poster is through to the all-Ireland competition. Congratulations to the girls and to their art teacher Mrs Mary Foley.

Weee Ireland

On Friday the TYs had a visit from Ken of Weee Ireland, who spoke on the importance of recycling electrical equipment. This was very beneficial to us as here at the Ard Scoil we do our very best to recycle.

Finally the TY girls were set a challenge by Ken to make as many people as they can aware of the battery recycling boxes in the school.
