Hockey, Amnesty International Christmas Card Appeal, Concern Fastival
29th November 2010
Hockey
On the freezing cold morning of Friday November 26th, the first and second year Ard Scoil Hockey teams set off to play matches in Carrigtwohill.
The second year team had a successful game and won by 1-0. Centre forward Lauren McGregor scored the goal with help from Roisin Leonard. Goal keeper Kayleigh Veale had some brilliant saves, ably assisted by Taylor Murray, Aisling Tobin and the other backs. It was a great team effort and the mid fielders Orla Hickey, Courtney Taylor and Stella Queally had some great hits and runs.
The first years had their match then, but were unlucky and lost 3-0. However this was their first game and they did very well for their first outing. Goal keeper Anna Whelan made some great saves and Erica Crotty and Aileen Power made some brilliant runs.

Amnesty International
On Friday the 26th, Jay Flavin from the Cork Amnesty International group visited the Ard Scoil to raise awareness of their fight for Human Rights world wide. He gave a presentation to the first years, highlighting the importance of the current Amnesty Christmas Card Appeal. The purpose of the appeal is to put pressure on governments to release people who are unjustly imprisoned. It is the only time of the year when Amnesty members can write directly to prisoners of conscience. These cards also inspire the prisoners with hope during their difficulties.
The first years are very enthusiastic about setting up their own Amnesty Christmas Card Appeal in our school.

Concern Fastival
Between the 25th and 26th of November a record number of students, from all years, participated in the Concern Fastival. This year the goal of the Fastival is to raise one million euros to help prevent childhood malnutrition.
Congratulations to all who participated by fasting or giving up something else, for example their mobile phone for 12/24 hours. Thanks also to all who supported those participating and we would like to remind everyone to bring in their sponsorship cards as soon as possible.
