A New Year Begins & Summer Sports Achievements
Newsletter 5th September 2010
Welcome
We welcome all our new first year students as they embark on their secondary school studies in the Ard Scoil. We would like to thank our wonderful Cáirde Girls, who were on hand to welcome them and help them settle in on their first day. We would also like to welcome students who have joined is in other years, especially those from France, Spain and Germany.
Congratulations
First a big congratulation to the class of 2010, and their teachers, for their excellent results in the Leaving Cert exams. We wish them the very best in their future studies and careers.
Sports
Many of our students had a busy summer, competing in a wide array of sports, and we wish to the well done to them for their endeavours.
Zoe Scanlan won the Discus at the Celtic International for the fourth year in a row. She also won the All-Ireland Shot and Discus U18.
Claire Collins was runner up in the All Ireland U19 High Jump, and also won the HJ competition in the League Final when competing for West Waterford Senior Club.
Another High Jump success was Laura Connors, who came third in the Munster U15 competition. Laura also had joy in another jumping competition, but this time with the aid of her pony. She had a good round of jumping at the RDS and also came fourth in the National Show Jumping Competition.
Also enjoying equine achievement was Meábh de Burca, who was one of 30 through to the jump off in the National Finals and came a fantastic fourth in her competition.
It looks like we’ll have good school teams for Equestrian events with these two and others doing so well over the summer months.
Yet another field of sport where some of our girls excelled was Handball. Laura McGregor won the Munster U13 Handball Title, and Aoife Landers won the Munster U15.
Aoife also, along with Siobhan Nugent and Aoife Gallagher, was part of the Waterford U16 Camogie team, who won this year’s Munster Title. They were unfortunately beaten by Down in the All Ireland Semi Final.
Doubling more GAA sports, Aoife Landers and Siobhan Nugent were on the Munster Minor Football winning team, which also played in the All-Ireland Shield against Fermanagh. Alongside them on the team was Shauna Ferncombe.
And let us not forget past pupil Shona Curran, who is playing with Waterford in the All Ireland Camogie Final next Weekend.
Well done to all these competitors, and we look forward to your Sporting progress during the forthcoming academic year.
