Waterford Ladies Football

All eyes will be glued to TG4 on Sunday the 26th of September when Waterford Intermediate Ladies Footballers will play in the All-Ireland Final in Croke Park. Beating Roscommon, Antrim, Kilkenny, Longford and Cavan along the way, the Waterford management team fancy their chances against opponents Donegal. Ard Scoil na nDeise is represented by 6th year student Roisin Tobin and past pupils Aoife McGovern, Mary Foley (captain) and Grainne Enright.

Congratulations and good luck also to the Waterford Junior Camogie team which drew with Antrim on Sunday in the All Ireland Final. Ard Scoil was again represented by past pupils Shona Curran and Deirdre Fahey. We wish them all the best for the replay on Oct 3rd.

Mount Melleray by Orla Fitzgerald

The 6th year group visited Mount Melleray on Wednesday 8th September. On our arrival to the Monastery we were greeted by Br. Dennis. We were then taken to learn the history of the Monastery and Monastic life. Afterwards, what we had learned was opened to discussion, one which we all found very interesting and in which we participated. We were then given a chance to stretch our legs by walking the grounds, which are beautiful and very well maintained.

Shortly after 12 we, along with teachers Ms Cotter and Ms Dowdall, went to the Chapel to pray. Most of the prayers were conducted through song, and it was a very peaceful experience. Br Dennis explained that silence was a key part of Monastic life.

Following a nice lunch we made our way back to school, but not without visiting the Grotto on the way. We got holy water there and prayed. All the year enjoyed this tranquil day out, a nice break from our rigorous studies.

Junior Cert. results

Our 2010 J.C. students will be on tenterhooks till they receive their results on Wednesday. We’re sure they will be very successful and hope they will enjoy their celebrations.

T.Y. Surfing Trip – Norma Kearns

On Wednesday the 8th of September we went surfing at the Oceanics Surf School in Tramore. We arrived at the centre shortly before 10 o clock and met Paul, who divided us into two groups.

My group, TYB, got to go surfing first, whilst TYA went for a walk. Paul brought us into the centre and issued us instructions as to where we going, what we were doing and how to be safe. Then he brought us to get our wet suits and to meet our instructors for the session. They then showed us how to paddle and how to stand on the surf board – properly!!

We formed into pairs and took the journey to the beach, carrying our boards with us. It was then time to hit the sea and catch some waves… Or, at least, try to!! There were some amazing successes, some complete failures, but all in all a brilliant amount of fun!

Following our surfing antics, we had some duly deserved lunch! Then the afternoon was spent on a leisurely walk down Tramore Strand – finding sand dunes and rock pools during our exploration. We learned about the environment and eco-system of the area.

When we finished our walk it was time to say goodbye to Oceanics Surf School and the team there. Tired but happy we got back on the bus and headed home.
