August 5th, 2010

Dear Parents/Guardians,

A special welcome to the parents/guardians of our new pupils at Ard Scoil na nDéise and we look forward to meeting the First Year students on Friday, August 27th.  I enclose a copy of the provisional school calendar for 2010/2011. Please keep the calendar for reference, and you will also find it on the school website.

Return of Classes – August 2010.

1st Years                                               Friday, August 27th
2nd Years & 5th Year                             Monday, August 30th
3rd & 6th Year                                       Tuesday, August 31st
Transition Year                                      Wednesday, September 1st

Lunchtime arrangements

Our lunch break will be from 12.55 p.m. to 1.35 p.m. and students must be back punctually in the afternoon.

All First Year students must stay in school at lunchtime. Healthy food only, please!

School will finish at 3.35 p.m. from Monday to Thursday and 3.20 p.m. on Fridays. The slight change in the afternoon times this year is to facilitate timetabling for shared senior subject options with C.B.S.

School Office now open

General Purpose Fee

The school office is now open each day from 9.15 a.m. to 1.00 p.m. and 1.45 p.m. to 4.15 p.m. for payment of the General Purpose Fee, student insurance etc., avoiding students coming to school with large amounts of cash when school starts.  As you know, we rely on the General Purpose Fee to cover major expenses such as photocopying, use of school equipment etc. The cost is €60 for one student, €100 for two sisters, €120 for three sisters. The General Purpose Fee at Ard Scoil na nDéise has not increased for a number of years now and it may be paid all at once or by instalments.

Pupil Personal Accident Insurance

I enclose insurance forms for pupils. The Board of Management requires that all students take out this insurance which costs only €5 per pupil for activities during school hours and €8 per pupil for 24 hour cover. Please bring the form to the office with the money.

School journal

All students must have the school journal which will be available from the school office and costs €8.50. Please return the signed school rules from your daughter’s new journal to the office.  This refers to all students in the school except First Year students who have already done it for this year.

If your daughter is absent from school please write a note on one of the green pages in her school journal and sign it. This is necessary, because teachers must check the notes for the National Education Welfare Board.  Phone calls are not a substitute for notes. When your daughter needs a pass-out to leave school during the day, please use the yellow pages in the journal for the note.

Update of addresses and phone numbers
Please fill in the enclosed form and return it to the school office as soon as possible, so that we have accurate contact details before the school year begins.  We hope to introduce a text messaging arrangement for important reminders and emergencies, so accurate, up to date numbers are essential.  It is the responsibility of parents to fill in the green form now and to inform the school secretary of changes of address or phone numbers as they arise during the school year.

School books

This year we again have minimum changes in school textbooks and we encouraged all students to buy and sell second hand.  We asked Junior Cert students to bring in books which would be needed by the First Year students, and we were disappointed that not many availed of the opportunity to sell books to parents of the new First Year students.  Incoming Fifth Year students had the opportunity to meet last year’s Sixth Year students to exchange contact details and they should have some second hand books bought from those girls by now.

On Friday, August 20th from 2.00 p.m. to 3.00 p.m. Mr. Collins will be in the Junior Hall to facilitate a further book sale. Ard Scoil students/parents who have books to sell and Ard Scoil students/Ard Scoil parents who wish to buy second hand books are invited to come in.  The current school booklists for each year are on the school website www.ardscoildungarvan.com.  Please check the lists in advance and bring in only books which will be needed. Remember to bring change, as each student must sell their own books.  If you wish to buy books please bring change also.

Book vouchers
Book vouchers are now ready for those parents who applied and qualify for them.  Parents/guardians must sign a form, so vouchers cannot be collected by students. Vouchers are to be used to purchase school books.

Uniform

I would appreciate your support in ensuring that students wear the full uniform to school every day and I would ask you to read the section regarding uniform carefully when you are signing the rules in your daughter’s new journal.  As stated in the school rules, make-up is not part of the uniform. Students must have a second school pants or skirt, in case school pants get torn or wet.  Runners are not to be worn, except in P.E. class.

The optional Ard Scoil na nDéise school sweatshirt which many students ordered the year before last was very popular, and Ms Pickering has arranged to order them again this year. Sizes will be checked and money (€27) will be collected in full before the order is made. Remember that the sweatshirt may not be worn in class or as a substitute for the school jumper!!  It may be worn as an outdoor jacket, for going to school sports events and school matches.

Supervised Study

Supervised study will take place as usual and forms will be available from Ms. Fox as soon as school begins.

The Leaving Certificate class of 2010 and their parents are anxiously awaiting their results which we expect on Wednesday, August 18th, and we wish our graduates every success in the future.

I would appreciate your cooperation in coming to the school office during the coming weeks to make the necessary payments for your daughter and to bring in the green form.

I thank you for your support and I hope that students enjoy the rest of the holidays.

Yours faithfully,

Dorothy Hughes
Principal
