Ard Scoil na nDéise Parents’ Council Present €10,000 to the School Newsletter - 5th July 2010

A Message of thanks from the Principal of Ard Scoil na Déise On Thursday, June 24th the Board of Management of Ard Scoil na nDéise hosted a meal for the Parents’ Council, in appreciation of the outstanding work done by these parents for our school. During the year the Parents’ Council organised bag packing in Garvey’s Supervalu and two flag days, activities in which the students themselves were also involved. Teresa Daly held one of her very successful concerts in the Town Hall in aid of the school, and in November parents enjoyed a most entertaining table quiz. But probably the fundraising highlight of the year was the event in which all students participated, the Fancy Dress Fun Run. It was fantastic to see everybody so actively involved in raising funds for their school. Our Parents’ Council, working with our Deputy Principal Mrs Colette Power and under the leadership of Mr Maurice Power, supports us in so many ways in the school. They attend and work at Open Night and graduations, Awards Night, weekly Bingo in the Sports Centre, pantomime and Welcome Evening, in addition to their regular meetings and involvement in the preparation of school policies. They certainly do their utmost to ensure that this school is constantly improving for our students. Their enthusiasm and positive “can do” attitude is a fantastic support to the teachers, the Board of Management and to me as Principal. I would also like to thank all parents and friends of Ard Scoil na nDéise who supported our various fundraising efforts during the year, including everybody who attends the Bingo in the Sports Centre on Monday nights. As usual, we had a very busy year in the Ard Scoil. The education cutbacks have increased the workload in every school, but we are now educating the young people who will seek employment when the situation improves, so we must ensure that they are ready to avail of the opportunities that will arise. The more skills young people have nowadays the better, so I was particularly happy to see so many of our Transition Year students graduating with the ECDL exams completed, Gaisce Bronze medal achieved, certificates in First Aid, competence in Public Speaking etc etc. The Intel computer course for retired people was a welcome addition to our Transition Year curriculum, and we are very grateful to local employers who took our students for work experience. Our school pantomime and the skiing trip to Bulgaria ensured a happy atmosphere during the long, cold winter, and in the realm of sport we had a very high level of participation and achievement this year. I am extremely grateful to the teachers who give so generously of their free time to ensure that our students are offered such a wide range of extra-curricular activities, educational experiences, outings and tours in addition to the preparation for state examinations. Our secretaries, caretaker and cleaning staff worked with Mrs Colette Power, the teachers and myself to make our school a very pleasant place to work and learn. The students who finished their Leaving Certificate exams last week are hopefully enjoying a well earned rest for a few weeks before the results arrive, and I wish them the very best for the future. We look forward to welcoming our new First Year students to the school on Friday, August 27th. In the meantime, I hope that everybody enjoys the lovely Summer weather. Sincerely, |
