Track Records, Cake Sale, Donkey Sanctuary, Hair Care, Trip to Venice Newsletter 10th November 2010 Superb Jumping by Claire Collins and Laura Connors The Ard Scoil girls were in action over the past two weeks at both the Waterford and East Munster Schools Championships, which were held in the RSC. Last Wednesday there was some fantastic jumping in both the junior and senior girls high jump events. In the junior event Laura Connors tied for first place after a jump off failed to separate the top two. Laura jumped 1m 48 which added another 8cms to her personal best. In the senior girls Claire Collins equalled her best of 1m 63 when winning the senior girls title. For good measure Zoe Crotty finished third in the inter girls event. In the triple jump Aine Power won a silver medal with a jump of 9m 33. In the throwing events Zoe Scanlon had a double in the senior shot and discus and Ciara Scanlan had six metres to spare when winning the intermediate hammer. On the track Kaylee Norris and Eimear Duff were first and second in the under 16 mile and Rebecca Maher was second in the senior 3000m. All of the above have qualified for the Munster Schools Championships, which will be held in CIT on Saturday May 22nd. Discus Record for Zoe ScanlonAt the Waterford schools championships Zoe Scanlon set a new record in the senior girls event when she threw the discus 36m 60. Zoe also won the shot and Una Mc Grath finished second. Ardscoil filled the first two places in the minor girls javelin with Amy Yellop winning gold and Edel Power the silver. Edel also finished third in the minor shot. Aine Power won the inter girls triple jump and there was also a win for Laura Connors in the junior high jump. Claire Collins was one of three athletes who cleared 1m60 in the senior high jump. Taylor Murray won her first track and field medal when she finished third in the long jump and there was also a third place finish by Raeanne Barry in the junior triple jump. To round off a very successful day our inter girls team of Aine Power, Una Mc Grath, Kaylee Norris and Eimear Duff finished third in the relay. T.Y. News. Since their return from work experience, the T.Y. students have been busy as usual. Along with regular classes, they have been involved in all sorts of activities and have written some accounts of these for me. Naomi Roche and Andrea Foley. The Donkey Sanctuary. T.Y. student Kristie Foley wrote the following piece. During Lent , Kristie saved her “snack” money and donated €60 to the Donkey Sanctuary. On the 5th of May we had a talk on the Donkey Sanctuary. The speaker showed us pictures , ones showing the animal before it is treated and ones after. Some of the donkeys were in very poor condition and the difference after the treatment was phenomenal! The Sanctuary never puts a donkey down unless the quality of life is totally lost. The donkeys are treated very well; they get lots of care and attention and roam freely at grass. The talk was excellent and we saw that the Sanctuary does great work. The class found it very interesting and I think everyone wants to adopt a donkey……you can do this by donating €20 a year towards its upkeep. Hair Care. On Tuesday, April 27th, Eleanor from “The Colour Room” came to speak to us about how to take good care of our hair. She discussed problems that could arise, for example from over use of colouring etc. She gave us very good advice on the proper care of our hair. Mrs. Stack gave us all tickets and at the end of the session, Eleanor raffled a GHD. Siobhan won it and she was delighted. We had a Brill time and thank you to Eleanor for coming to talk to us. Lorraine Crotty. The TY’s have also finished their song books, a project for English class and their French and German projects. Together with all the other work completed during the year, they will bring these to their end of year interview. It seems like only yesterday that they were starting T.Y. and awaiting their Junior Cert results! School Tour to Venice. Just a quick reminder that final payment for the tour is due shortly. I would like to remind all tourists also to make sure to have their passport and European health card when they return to school in September. We can begin looking forward to our visit to Venice and the Lake Garda region and Verona and, of course, Gardaland! I’m sure many will be checking these out on the internet.
