Festival of Food Cooking Competition.

Laura Tobin and I, on the 19th March, set off to Colaiste Cathal Naofa to cook in the Waterford Festival of Food inter-schools cookery competition.  We had to meet a brief requiring us to cook either  fish, chicken or any mince.  It was a tough decision and after a smaller scale school competition we decided to cook “Andalusian Chicken”.  When we arrived at Cathal Naofa,  we did our very best.  We were competing against six other schools from the County and the standard was very high.  All of the contestants including ourselves were watched closely by the panel of judges.

The highlight of the competition was when the judges had finished their tasting and we all got to sample each others dishes.  They announced the finalists:  C.B.S., Blackwater and Ard Scoil na nDéise.  On the 16th April, at the launch of the Food Festival in the shopping centre plaza, the winners were announced.  All three finalists were excited.  The boys from the C.B.S. were given 3rd Place, Blackwater 2nd and we took 1st Place. Laura and I got brilliant prizes, kindly donated by the sponsors and committees.  We enjoyed the tickets to the cookery demo’s on the Saturday morning and are counting down the days to our trip to the Tannery Cookery School in July and have nearly spent the Dunnes Stores Vouchers.  Thanks again to the Festival Organisers.

Festival of Food Biscuit Baking

On Saturday 13th of April, along with Mrs. Fox ad some adults, transition year and second year students helped out with the festival of food. In the Ard Scoil, there was a workshop called “Busy with Biscuits” for primary school students.  The Ard Scoil girls volunteered to help the children bake and decorate the cookies. It lasted for 30 minutes, and there were four sessions between 10 and 3 o’clock. The children were very excited, chatty and we heard lots saying “We will be back next year”. All the children went home with happy faces, plenty of lovely cookies and a festival of food apron. As for us volunteers, we thoroughly enjoyed it and we even got some cookies ourselves!

T.Y.  Cookery Competitions.

On April 26th, the final of our Cookery Competition took place.  Prior to the Easter Holidays , TYA and TYB classes took their own class competition, four pairs of students from each class were successfully chosen to compete in the final.  They had to design a three course menu suitable for teenagers bearing in mind current nutritional guidelines.  With a budget of €20.00, they had to prepare, cook and serve the main course with either a starter or dessert.

Much research of recipes occurred.  The first round of the competition was judged by Miss L. Walsh and Miss C. Fox.  The final was judged by Mrs. Eunice Power of Powersfield House assisted by Mrs. C. Power.  All students were highly excited on the day.  Eunice was very impressed by the standard of culinary skills and the vast array of chosen dishes, finally with much thought and deliberation, the winners were announced.

In 3rd Place – Aisling Fox and Sarah Connors;  2nd Place – Colleen Whelan;  1st Place – Maire O’Donnell and Emma McCarthy.  Their winning menu consisted of Chicken Fajitas and Salad, and Double Orange Cake.  Eunice presented the winners with their prizes and was presented in turn with a bouquet of flowers.  We wish to thank Eunice most sincerely for judging our competition and for all her encouragement and advice to continue developing our culinary skills.
