Successful Fun Run.
On Friday, the entire school took time out for the Fun Run organised by the Parents’ Council to fundraise for the school. We were blessed with a lovely bright morning and many dressed up for the occasion, as hobos or angels. I think second and third years would take prizes for the most interesting costumes.
Following the run, a draw was held for all those who collected in excess of €80. Prize winners were: Sinéad Barnett, Nicola Quilty and Ciara Beresford with Jade Hayes winning the €100 phone voucher.
There were many other spot prizes, one of them going to our visitor from the U.S., Libby Federici, one of the Mercyhurst College group.
Our thanks to the Parents’ Council and all those who supported this fund raising effort by donating so generously.
Victory for the Hockey Team.
On Wednesday last the Ard Scoil hockey team went to Midleton to play Scoil Mhuire in the league. After previous bad games Ard Scoil were out to prove themselves. A great start was made by the Ard Scoil side with a lot of scoring chances. The backs – Shauna Ferncombe, Maeve Brockie and Yeliz Genc battled hard and their efforts resulted in a scoreless Scoil Mhuire side. Aoife Landers mighty shot found the goal before half time.
In the second half Scoil Mhuire came out fighting but goalie Tara Healy made some magnificent saves. Our midfielders worked together well helping the flow of ball between backs and forwards. Another goal from Aoife was disallowed for a final score of 1 – 0, a win for the Ard Scoil. (Ciara Scanlon)
T.Y. Gaisce.
On Thursday the 18th, the transition year girls set off to Limerick for their Gaisce hike. The hike was 24 km but it was divided over the two days. 12 km on Thursday and 12 km on Friday. The leaders were “sound out” and they ganged up with the teachers to scare us! However, Siobhan got her revenge. Poor Maighread Barron wasn’t too lucky as she woke up scared, screaming at four in the morning! The hike itself was muddy but that didn’t stop the girls from getting stuck in, Ciara Scanlon more than others, as she tried to jump a mud puddle and failed miserably, getting covered from head to toe in mud! Overall the girls were tired but said it was the best experience and they would do it again in a split second. (Roisin McComb)
Thanks to teachers, Ms. Pickering and Ms. O’Shea, who accompanied the girls. This is an element of their work to earn the Gaisce (Presidents Award) medal. They have been involved in a variety of other ways, homework club, well girl days etc.
Waterford Festival of Food Interschool Cookery Competition.
Well done to Ms. Fox’s students, Laura Tobin and Lucy Whelan, who finished in the top three of the Interschools cookery competition. Congratulations also to the C.B.S students, Finbarr Duff White and Kieran Conway, students of Mrs. Colette Power. They’re looking forward to the Festival when they will have the opportunity to work alongside some of the Festival’s chefs. They had a wonderful day and really enjoyed the experience.
First Year Concert.
On Friday afternoon, T.Y. students, Sophie Duhig and Katie Whyte organised the talent of the first years into a wonderful concert. We have many talented musicians, singers, actors and dancers in first year who will hopefully entertain us for years to come.
Joan Bean de Paor, First Year Year Head, was really appreciative of the work put in by the T.Y. students to rehearse and organise the girls – to set up sound, lighting and video systems and who made sure all went smoothly. It was a wonderful afternoon and we will look forward to future performances by these young stars.
