Munster Camogie Champions! Leinster House Visit & More Newsletter 8th February 2010 Munster Camogie Champions! Obviously the visit by Waterford hurler John Mullane and County Camogie development officer Mark Cooney and their talk with the Under 16 and a half camogie team helped to spur them on to a magnificent victory in Mallow against Causeway/ Camp on Saturday. The girls won the match convincingly with a score of 5-2 to 2-5. Congratulations to the girls and their mentor, Ms Emillie Pickering. We will have a full match report and photos next week. 3rd Year Visit to Leinster House As part of our C.S.P.E. project, we organised for all 3rd year students to visit Leinster House in Dublin. The aim of the visit was to learn more about the running of the Irish Government. Our party of 4 teachers and 54 students left for Dublin at 8.00 a.m. and arrived at midday. We went to the National Art Gallery first where we saw beautiful paintings by some famous artists. After this, we had some free time for shopping and the group met again at 3.00p.m. When we arrived at Leinster House, we saw the Minister for Education, Mr. Bat O’Keeffe and some even had their photos taken with him. We then met Senator Paudie Coffey, our local representative, who was kind enough to book us into Leinster House and meet us on the day. We met our tour guide, Pat, who brought to the public gallery from where we saw the Tánaiste, Ms. Mary Coughlan. Pat told us many interesting facts about Leinster House. It was known as Kildare House when it was built in 1745 by James Fitzgerald, the Earl of Tyrone. Pat showed us portraits of past Taoisigh and he brought us into the Seanad which was in session. There were beautiful designs on the ceilings. We returned to the public gallery so that we could see Brian Cowen and Enda Kenny. We had our photographs taken outside the building. It was a great trip and we learned a lot about the history of Leinster House and we got to see Governments from the public gallery. I would recommend that students from all schools should go visit Leinster House as it was very enjoyable and educational. Sarah Crotty. Show Jumping On Sunday, January 31st, Meabh de Burca represented the Ard Scoil in the Ballyrafter Interschools’ Individual competition. She had to be at Ballyrafter at 9.00 a.m. to walk the course. Having jumped two beautiful clear rounds and qualified for the speed round, she had a long wait until this began. However Meabh is well used to competitive jumping and was not fazed by the long interval between rounds. Indeed she blazed around the course to finish a very fast third. Congratulations to Meabh and thank you to her mentor Mrs. Louise Moloney and of course her mother, Mrs Marion de Burca for their support. T.Y. Activities. The T.Y.s are having their usual busy time with all sorts of events and some have taken time to write of these for me. On Tuesday we had a cookery demonstration with Eunice Power of Powersfield House who cooked three fish dishes. The first was Baked salmon with a pesto and parmesan crust, this took about 20 minutes to cook and was delicious. Then she made a fish pie using different types of fish. Again it took about 20 minutes and would serve 4/5 people. Finally she made a fish stew which included mussels. This took approximately 15 minutes and just like the other dishes was very very tasty! We would like to thank Eunice for coming to demonstrate these dishes and look forward to seeing her again soon when she will judge our T.Y. Cookery competition. Claire Meeney. Well Girl Day On Friday, January 5th in association with the Waterford Sports Partnership, some T.Y. students organised A Well Girl event for the first years. This involved a lot of hard work organising the event, getting parental permission, setting up the halls etc. We divided the first years into four groups and each group took part in all four activities; yoga, badminton, self-defence and hip-hop/aerobics. They all thoroughly enjoyed these activities. Thanks to Ms. Pickering and Peter Jones of the west Waterford Sports Partnership for helping us to organise the event and also a big thank you to the coaches who helped to make this such an enjoyable day. T.Y. Team; Nikita Whelan, Sophie Duhig, Alison O’Sullivan, Roisin McComb, Katie Whyte, Aisling Cronin and Sophie Allen. Thanks to Nikita for this report. One Good Idea, Power of One Energy Project. Five Transition Year students, Saoirse Drohan, Jennifer Moore Nikita Whelan, Alison O’Sullivan and Charlotte Govier are currently working on the One Good Idea, Power of One energy project. This involves them in spreading the message in school and at home on everyday saving of energy. The girls will have to work hard as the closing date for entries is the 24th of March. Twenty teams will be shortlisted and have the opportunity to showcase their work at the prestigious National Final which will take place in Dublin in May. The girls will have a poster competition and a quiz for 1st years. They also have written and energy saving song, adapting “Hallelujah” to their own words. Jennifer Moore. Other ongoing projects in French German and a magazine in English class are also ongoing and we will be hoping for good news with those T.Y. students who compete in St. Augustine’s on Monday in the county final of the Enterprise competition Catholic Schools Week To initiate Catholic Schools’ week, our chaplain, Fr. Paul Waldron had a ceremony to celebrate the blessing of the Miraculous Medals. This ceremony is a tradition of the Ard Scoil since the late Sr. Rosario taught here. Each first year student was given a Miraculous medal with an accompanying leaflet. Thanks to Sr.Patricia who attended as a representative of the Mercy Sisters and to Sr. Philomena who prepared the medals. The intercom was used each day as students read the prayer for the day so that the entire school could participate. This week we celebrate the Feast of our Patron, Our Lady of Lourdes. Thursday is the actual date but we will celebrate with a Mass on Friday at 12.00 in St. Mary’s Parish church. We would like to invite past pupils, parents and supporters of our school to join us in this celebration. |
