Open Night

Last Thursday night, the Ard Scoil welcomed 6th class girls and their parents to our Open night. We would like to thank all the staff and our wonderful pupils who volunteered to come in and help. As usual the girls were excellent ambassadors for the school as they displayed their many talents with such courtesy and good humour. A huge thank you also to our super Parents’ Council who once again catered the refreshments at the end of the evening….never did a cup a of tea taste so good!

Camogie Team progress to Munster Final

On Tuesday, January 26th, the Ard Scoil under 16 and a half camogie team took on St. Mary’s of Macroom in the Munster semi final. This proved to be a close match with the Ard Scoil winning by 2 goals to a goal and a point.

The first half ended with neither team having scored. St. Mary’s opened the scoring 5 minutes into the second half with a point, followed minutes later by a goal. However the Ard Scoil persevered with Orla Hickey scoring the first goal and Lauren McGregor scoring the second five minutes from the end of the match.

We would like to thank Dungarvan G.A.A. club for the use of their pitch and we wish Eimear O’Donnell a speedy recovery after breaking her knuckle during the match.

Ard Scoil will now play Causeway Comprehensive in the Munster Final in a few weeks. We wish Ms. Pickering and her team the very best of luck.

Athletics

On Friday, Mrs Ashe’s athletes didn’t have to travel too far to compete in the East Munster Cross Country Championships which were held in St. Augustine’s

The Junior girls’ team, Kate Curran, Dearbhla Whelan, Clodagh Keane and Jessica Terry came 4th and qualified for the Munster Championships.

Intermediate runner Kayleigh Norris came in the first fifteen and also qualified for the |Munster s.
The Senior girls, Rebecca Maher, Claire Collins, Roisin Tobin and Meabh de Burca came 2nd and as well as qualifying for the Munsters won the Waterford Senior Cup as the top county team.

We would like to congratulate Zoe Scanlon who was one of the Finalists for the Pat Nochter award on Friday night. Zoe has represented her school and club at the highest levels for discus and last year successfully represented Ireland in the International Schools’ Championships.

T.Y. Horse Riding Trip

One of the T.Y.s wrote the following account of their horse riding adventures.

We headed off to Colligan Equestrian Centre at 1.30 on January 26th. When we arrived we put on our helmets and the beginners mounted their horses while the more experienced riders led them. We started off at a walk and then we began to trot. Everyone thought it was a bit hard at first but by the end they had improved a lot. After this, the more experienced riders got into the saddle and did some cantering and trotting. It was brilliant and everyone had fun with the horses and took pictures.

All the horses were really sweet and it was a great fun day out and we returned to school tired but very happy. We can’t wait to go again!!! We would like to thank Mr.Collins and Louise Moloney for taking the time with us.

Humour Fit

On Friday morning ‘Humour Fit’ performed for all classes. It was a one man show about teenage life relationships and mental health. Before the play the presenter gave a short introduction about the themes of the play, ‘The Value of Life”. A teenage boy was struggling with depression, but didn’t realise it until it was almost too late. Even though it was a sensitive topic, it had a humorous side. In the end the boy saw the value of his life and got a second chance. The play encouraged us all to think more deeply about sensitive issues formally discussed in SPHE classes. Everyone left the hall full of discussion and chat. Thanks to Ms. Pickering for organising the show.
