Sixth Year Biology Field trip to Fota.
Emma Kiely wrote this account of the sixth year Biology class outing to Fota.
Last week, all 6th year biology students went to Fota Wildlife Park for the day to carry out our ecology field study. We left the school at 8,30 and arrived in Fota an hour later, accompanied by our teachers, Mrs. Stack and Mrs. O’Hare.
From the minute we set foot in the park we were all excited, we just couldn’t wait to see the animals.
The first item on our agenda was the talk given by a Fota staff member. It was very interesting and we asked lots of questions.
After the talk, we had a break so we headed straight for the gift shop where we saw shelves and shelves of cuddly animals like the real ones in the park. We all went to the café for lunch and sat outside on the benches next to the flamingos.
Then we were called into the forest to complete the practical side of the study. We were divided into two groups and set about our work. We had to study a line transect, throw some quadrants and even suck up bugs with a pooter!
By the end of the day, we were all really tired as we headed home. We thought of all we had learned during the day. It was a great day out, one we will always remember!
