"Reaching our Potential with Respect, Care and Friendship"

Newsletter

June 2009, Summer is here at last.

On Monday, May 25th, the T.Y. students celebrated the end of an excellent year with their graduation ceremony when they received the many certificates they had earned during the year. This course, so well organised by T.Y. coordinator, Mrs.Anne Stack, helped by Mr.Tommy Collins, is one year ALL the students want to repeat!  They have time to explore the usual academic subjects in non exam ways which helps them to make choices for the Leaving Cert. As well, they have the opportunity to enjoy a broad range of activities and events which will help them in their future lives.

A week before, they held an exhibition of the wonderful Art work of the Carriglea ladies, a super display of many different aspects of art, painting, collages, sculpture etc.Every year, under the leadership of Art teacher Mrs Mary Foley, the girls find great delight in working with the ladies to produce works for this exhibition .

Each class produced a very professional Year Book, using the many skill learned in I.T classes throughout the year. Reading through these make you wonder how they found the time and had the energy to cover all they did, here’s a quick list; cookery competitions, Cleamhnas for Seachtain na Gaeilge, Fashion Show and concert, Quiz with C.B.S, Enterprise , First Aid,. Engineering, Law Day, Hair Care Day, Retreat, Food Hygiene, Well Girl, Craft Fair.  There were also trips to theatre in Cork for the Drama Classes, surfing, horse riding, outdoor pursuits, the ploughing championships and so much more!

On the night they received their certificates for their many achievements including Step into Marketing, a self directed course where the girls have to follow a specific course under director Ms.Anne Gleeson and finally have to make a sales presentation. Once again we were thankful to MrDavid |Reynolds of Sherry Fitzgerald Reynolds, who judged the girls presentations and presented their certs on the night.
Liam Moore of Honeywell runs a course in manual handling every year; this teaches safe procedures in the work place and health and safety issues. Mr Moore presented awards to the girls who had ac hieved the highest grades in the written exam.

Many students took part in the E.C.D.L programme which is offered to T.Y. pupils in the Ard Scoil under the leadership of I.T. teacher Mr. Declan O’Keeffe. Twelve girls completed all seven elements of the Licence and others will complete the final modules. This is an excellent programme and the licence is a superb addition to a C.V.

The Girls also became involved in Gaisce, the President’s Award. To gain their bronze medal, the girls had to complete different tasks which culminated in an overnight stay in Mount Melleray and two long hikes in the Commeraghs. Ms. Sinead Fahey directed the group, helped by Ms. Aoife Leahy and it’s hoped some of the girls will go on now to work for their silver medal.

The girls fund raised for so many charities during the year among them Concern, Happy Hearts, Special Olympics, Lourdes Trip, Crumlin Hospital, Amnesty the Hope Foundation.

At the Graduation, Stephanie O’Grady presented a cheque for € 300 to Mr. John Moran of West Waterford Hospice Homecare, the proceeds of a cake sale.

Course Coordinator Mrs Stack and Principal, Mrs Dorothy Hughes addressed the girls, parents, teachers and guests and spoke of their maturity and confidence. The classes in communications by Mrs. Simons and Ms. Neylin obviously contributed greatly to their confidence in public speaking as was evident on the night. They used their yea very well and will be well prepared to handle the demand s of the next two years as they prepare for the Leaving Certificate.

There were many sporting achievements during the year and congratulations to Claire Collins and Zoe Scanlon who recently won gold at the All Ireland Championships and go on to represent |Munster in the Tailteann Games
