Enrolment Policy Download Enrolment Form for School Year 2014-15 Introduction: Ard Scoil na nDéise is a Voluntary Catholic Secondary School under CEIST trusteeship. This school is a school for girls only and welcomes female students provided that the school can reasonably meet their educational needs and that they can benefit from what the school has to offer. As stated in the Faith Formation and Religious Education Policy of Ard Scoil na nDéise students of other faiths and non-believers are welcomed and respected. Code of Behaviour and other policies: All parents/guardians are required to sign the current Code of Behaviour on the enrolment of a student. The Code of Behaviour is the subject of ongoing review by the Board of Management and it is possible that it may be amended from time to time. The Board of Management will endeavour to notify parents and guardians of any changes thereto. It is presumed that on signing the Code of Behaviour that parents are agreeing to be bound by the Code of Behaviour and any subsequent amendments. In accordance with section 23 (4) of the Education (Welfare) Act 2000, parents/guardians must sign that they have read and understood the school’s Code of Behaviour as issued to them and that they will make all reasonable efforts to ensure compliance with the Code of Behaviour by their daughter. At the beginning of each school year parents and pupils are required to sign the most recent Code of Behaviour adopted by the Board of Management. On enrolment all students and parents of prospective students are asked to read and, where requested, sign other school policies which will be made available to them, e.g. Drugs Awareness Policy, Acceptable IT Use Policy and Homework/Study Policy. 1st Year Students: Parents or guardians who wish to have their daughter(s) considered for admission to Ard Scoil na nDéise as a first year student must complete the Ard Scoil na nDéise Application Form and send it in to the school office by the time and date stated on the Application Form with non-refundable registration fee stated on the form. Application Forms may be obtained from the school secretary. To be eligible for admission to Ard Scoil na nDéise a girl must have reached 12 years of age on 1st January in the calendar year following the girl’s entry into the school. Assessment of reading and numeracy skills is carried out by the Guidance Counsellor and Learning Support Teachers. This gives an objective indication of the need for learning support if this has not already been indicated from the primary school or from parents. Ard Scoil na nDéise operates mixed ability teaching where girls of differing abilities learn together. There may be some limitation on subject choices dictated by class sizes and resources. From Second Year onwards, some subjects are blocked to allow students to select higher or ordinary level courses. Transition Year: In Ard Scoil na nDéise Transition Year is optional. Student entry to Transition Year is by:
Ard Scoil na nDéise reserves the right not to accept a girl for Transition Year if there are grounds for believing that the student in question will not benefit from the Transition Year programme and/or that the learning of other students will be impeded. The number of student places available in Transition Year will be determined by the teaching resources allocated to Ard Scoil na nDéise by the Department of Education and Science. Students who are not accepted for Transition Year may appeal the decision of the Principal to the Board of Management. Transfer Students: Where a girl wishes to transfer from another second level school, an application must be made to the Principal. The application should be accompanied by appropriate references to include:
Ard Scoil na nDéise reserves the right to consult with the student’s previous school(s) in order to assess the application. A decision on the application will be made in accordance with this Admissions Policy. The parents/guardians should be aware that there may be some limitations on subject availability for students transferring to Ard Scoil na nDéise. Transfer from another school during a school year or course of study is generally not advisable and will be considered only in exceptional circumstances. Repeat Year: Parents/guardians of girls, other than Leaving Cert students, who wish to repeat a year should apply to the Principal before 1st May of the current academic year. Application to repeat a year will only be considered in the light of the strict criteria laid down by the Department of Education and Science, i.e.
All of these reasons must be supported by documentation and certification. Acceptance will be subject to the student doing her best to achieve the highest standards possible in the current academic year. Ard Scoil na nDéise has the right to grant or refuse such a request, taking into account such Department of Education and Science guidelines as may apply from time to time. Ard Scoil na nDéise welcomes Repeat Leaving Cert students subject to some limitations on subject availability and class size. Students with Special Educational Needs The Board of Management will do all it can to identify, plan and provide for girls with special needs who enrol in the school. Ard Scoil na nDéise seeks to identify and assess girls with learning difficulties as early and as thoroughly as is possible in order to properly address the student’s needs. Therefore the school will open a dialogue with parents and former schools attended by the student as early as possible, preferably in the month of January preceding entry to First Year, requesting all relevant information and reports in order to properly identify and assess needs Based on this assessment, Ard Scoil na nDéise will then apply to the Department of Education and Science for the necessary resources. It must be understood that the ability of Ard Scoil na nDéise to respond to the educational needs of any student applying for admission is subject to the Department of Education and Science supplying the appropriate facilities and resources to allow the school to answer that need. It may, therefore, be necessary for the Board to refuse to enrol a student if the DES does not provide adequate resources for their education. Right of the School to refuse enrolment: Ard Scoil na nDéise reserves the right to refuse enrolment to any student in exceptional cases. Such an exceptional case could include the following:
Right to Appeal: Where a decision is made to refuse enrolment of a student, the parent(s)/ guardian(s) of the student or, in the case of a student who has reached the age of 18 years, the student, shall be informed of the decision by letter. Pursuant to Section 29 of the Education Act, 1998, there is a statutory right of appeal to the Secretary General of the Department of Education and Science against a decision of the Board of Management to refuse to enrol a student. This right of appeal can be exercised by the parent(s)/guardian(s) of a student, or in the case of a student who has reached the age of 18 years, by the student. Appeals must be made within 42 calendar days from the date the decision of the school was notified to the parent/guardian or to the student. As a general rule, appeals will only be considered by the appeals committee under section 29 where the parties are unable to resolve the issue at local level. Accordingly, the appellant and the Board of Management will first consider the matter at local level to see if an accommodation can be reached. Appeals to the Secretary General must be made in writing on the appropriate form. The appellant should at the same time notify the school of any appeal or, alternatively, send a copy of the completed Application Form to the school. General:
