Career Guidance & Counselling Services
Mrs. Gleeson, School Guidance Counsellor
Dear Parents and Students,
Welcome to the Guidance and Counselling section of the school website. Here you will find some important information relating to the varied aspects of Guidance and Counselling in the school. I will also include important dates for your diary, including upcoming Open Days around the country and key application deadlines.
Any feedback or suggestions would be most welcome.
Parents play a huge role in the choices their children make when they start looking for a career. They influence the level of education or training that their children achieve; the knowledge they have about work and different occupations; the beliefs and attitudes they have to working; and the motivation they have to succeed.
Most of this is learned unconsciously – children and teenagers absorb the attitudes and expectations of them as they grow up. Some of the key influencers are:
• The expectations parents have for their children's education and career;
• The examples they set for their children;
• The values they show to their family, friends and to society;
• The opportunities they offer their children to learn and develop; and
• The kind of parent-child relationship they develop.
To nourish a health and rewarding career for your child, the following factors are worth considering:
- Encourage your children to get the most education possible.
- Strengthen their self-understanding.
- Develop their knowledge about work.
- Teach them decision making skills.
- Value gender equality and cultural diversity.
- Become aware of career resources.
- Help them become skill-oriented

Counselling Services
The Counselling and Guidance service in the school is concerned with the personal, educational and vocational development of the pupils.
The services of our Guidance Counsellor are available:
- to help in the transition from primary to secondary school,
- to provide support throughout secondary school and
- to assist students in making career choices.
Apart from classroom guidance, there are also opportunities for individual counselling.
The Guidance Counsellor welcomes opportunities to meet parents. Contact our Guidance Counsellor through the main school office.
Open Days
Students are highly encouraged to attend some of the many college open days on offer. A college or university Open Day allows students and parents the opportunity to “get a real feel” for the place, attend presentations on courses and college life and speak to course lecturers. I would recommend visiting any of the colleges/universities that students are interested in.
